Action News Without Monica Malpass

Let’s play amateur station executive. Your longtime 5 pm coanchor is departing. You’re still the top dog in town. What do you do to fill the slot?

Outside folks certainly do land directly on the anchor desk more often than used to be the case, so that’s an option. But for fun, say it’s not. What do you do within the parameters of your current lineup?

My plan would be to have Sarah Bloomquist take over as coanchor at 5. She already works with Rick Williams at noon, so it’s semi seamless. Replace her Sunday nights with Alicia Viterelli, and use another backup anchor Fridays at 4 in place of Alicia. Minimal disruption, keeps teams largely intact.

Except that’s she’s at CNN. And while channel 6 brings in people from other markets, there’s not a snowball’s chance in you know where that they’d put a former anchor from another station in town into an anchor slot. They rarely hire reporters from other stations in Philly. Jeff Skversky is one, and they have added Jessica Boyington.

What did 6ABC hire Boyington for?
