Any of you been getting strange calls from this number too?

Did a Google search on this number and it only gets more interesting. My Caller ID lists the name of the phone number holder as "NOT AVAILABLE". It also says it tried to call me at 9:37 and 10:02 AM Saturday morning.

They say it's probably a scam artist posing as a high-speed internet or satellite TV dealer using a pay phone number....

Here's more info in this number:

What happens when you call it?
(always find out where/who the number IS...BEFORE you dial it!)

DIAL this number:
206-421-1001
(You'll never GUESS which radio station answers THIS one!!)

If the problem persists, report it to Qwest and/or the FUZZzzzzzz...

I don't know, but if enough people call to jam their system as well as raise hell with the Attorney General's office for them using an automated dialer (a class C felony in WA - for EACH instance), that could send a VERY powerful message to these creeps.

It's always open season on telemarketers and spammers. When someone uses your telephone or e-mail or anything you use for personal communication to sell you something, it is just plain wrong....

I tried, but the number was busy.....

Not sure if it's a private line to a studio and if it is, I'm sure there was one very pissed off board op last night....

Reminds me of working for one of the music FM's in this town ... about the 3rd line in on request (a rollover for the publicized number) was often confused by listeners and they would dial it directly thinking they were hitting the request line of a competitor.

So...if you saw that one ringing by itself you could have some fun....

Jock: "Uh....yeah????"
Caller: "Is this {Competitor}??"
Jock: "Yeah...what the h%ll do YOU want...?"
Caller: "Can I Request a song??"
Jock: "CAN you..or MAY you? It better be a good one, cuz to be honest most of the stuff we play REALLY sucks and none of the jocks here can stand to play this crap"

and on it would go....with the caller getting more disgruntled as the ruse would proceed. Inevitably I'd end it with a big attitude problem and tell the caller that if they like THAT kind of song...then (OUR STATION) would probably play something like that. Go listen to THEM....

It's NOT actually a private line to a radio station, but a strange one
in that the last time I dialed it 'twas answered by the KISW jocks
and they told me it was blinking from the REQUEST lines!

I believe it USED to be one of the old KOMO-AM lines when they were music next to their 421-1000...

..however about 4-5 years ago (and I kid you not),
this SAME number would just connect you to a live feed of KMTT-FM.....weird!

Radio station phone numbers that start with 421 are not "real" numbers. They're part of a "choke network" which is used by the phone company to handle large caller volumes. The phone company automatically call-forwards to a local number - and that's what's installed on each of the lines in the studio.

Now, if you call a station whose local Seattle number does NOT begin with 421 - you're dialing a standard phone line just like the one you have at home.

Usuallly, only ONE 421-xxxx number is assigned to receive calls - so the example above (where 421-1001 went to KMTT) is certainly plausible - if KMTT reserved that "choke" number for themselves.

And yes, there are toll-free "choke" network numbers as well.

Re: Numbers (local or toll) that connect to feeds

If the other posts don't, this one really shows someone's lack of experience in radio.

They're called listen lines, kid.

And yes I know a couple of listen line numbers. But as a whole, most have gone by the wayside to the internet broadcasting (some have private feeds).

Before internet radio. a lot of stations used lines like that fed to corporate headquarters so they could hear what their stations sounded like.
