KGB-KLSD Shuffle

All Access is reporting that the sports format from 1360 moves to 760 tomorrow, which re-brands as "San Diego Sports 760", with 1360 becoming right-wing talk as "The Patriot 1360 AM""...clearing syndicated programming including PREMIERE's GLENN BECK and JESSE KELLY, RADIO AMERICA's CHAD BENSON and DANA LOESCH, and WESTWOOD ONE's "AMERICA IN THE MORNING," MARK LEVIN, and "RED EYE RADIO."

Makes sense, put the local programming on the bigger signal.. and use the smaller to just clear stuff.

Makes even more sense with the diminished XEPRS signal after a tower fell.

Wonder if there's any connection between this format flip, and AM 760's apparent daytime power upgrade. Did they actually get FCC approval to go from 5kw to 50kw daytime? Or are engineers just testing the planned diplex with AM 600 (as suggested in another thread)?

Thank goodness sports gets the GOOD signal!

As I mentioned on another thread, without approval they'd be violating the rules...

I remember moving to San Diego in the late 1980s when 760 KFMB was such a news and information powerhouse.....then bit-by-bit it turned into another generic right wing radio station where "right wing" is just a schtick.

Too bad KOGO AM 600 or KGB AM 760 don’t carry the Padres games. Here in the North County, 97.3 can be spotty with static if you are on the north-facing side of a hill (like I am). KOGO and KGB come in clear since they are on AM. One of the few cases where AM stations come in better than the FM stations due to terrain.

Unfortunately, I recently heard that the Padres re-upped with 97.3 The Fan so looks like it will be the app for me to listen to Padres games. Those network of translators that were supposed to fix the signal issues of 97.3 in the North County never fully materialized.

I caught the transition from “San Diego’s Talk AM 760 KGB” to “San Diego Sports AM 760 - America’s Finest Sports Station” live this morning right at midnight. Funny thing is, the flip occurred mid-legal ID as they were ID’ing as San Diego’s Talk AM 760 KGB to the new ID as San Diego Sports AM 760 - America’s Finest Sports Station with a FOX Sports Radio top of the hour sports update. So now, I go from not being able to pick-up AM 1360 KLSD at all at night to getting a crystal clear signal for KGB and it’s 50,000 watt signal.

Also of note in the announcement, local host Mike Slater moves from having a 3 hour show on 760 AM to KOGO AM 600 for a 5-7 P.M. show with Lou Penrose. I presume 7-8 P.M. will continue to be KOGO at night (why it doesn’t go until 10:00 P.M. is beyond me). KOGO still hasn’t replaced any local programming from 8:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. with old replays of Coast to Coast AM still airing. For those keeping track at home, KOGO airs a whooping 8 total hours of Coast to Coast AM from 8:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M.!

The local odd man out appears to be Mark Larson as he goes from having a 3 hour show on KGB to no show at all (at least from what I can tell).

The video of the transition from San Diego’s Talk AM 760 KGB to the new San Diego Sports AM 760 - America’s Finest Sports Station is here:

There is no daytime upgrade. It is 5 kw day, 50 kw night. No CP for a daytime upgrade, unless I am missing something in the new FCC system.

And when I was in San Diego in the mid-70s, KFMB was an adult contemporary music station with an irreverent attitude, Padres baseball, Aztecs basketball and football and a strong news department.

Bill Ballance’s arrival in 1978 was the beginning of the transition to talk, but, as you say, it wasn’t until the 90s that it began the slide to right-wing talk (ironically, when Mark Larson, now full-on right wing, was replaced as PD).

Might AM 760 be running with unauthorized higher power? Or a new day directional pattern aimed at me? Because it's broad daylight in San Diego right now, and I just checked again: the meter on my Sony radio shows 760 at the same signal strength as they have at night. Other RD participants have also posted about this, as discussed on the other thread about this station.

For years AM DXers have talked about nighttime “cheaters”…that is, stations running day power/patterns at night. Could 760 be the first example of a “daytime cheater”?

Paul... I have not heard anything about 1090's tower and/or if their signal is impaired. Where did you learn of this, how long ago was it, and what affect has it had on their signal and popularity? The 1090 Mighty/Mightier team has had such a struggle (especially with being removed from on-air for more than a year) it's a shame if mother nature has also now swung her fist at them too.

Thanks for recording it. Such an uninspiring flip. There should have been more of a hand-off... making it clear to the listener what is happening. They could have pre-produced a cute one signal greets the other signal message or skit... aired it simultaneously on both stations referencing both legal IDs and then departed onto their separate broadcast journeys. Ah well, creativity is dead in radio.

It was midnight on a Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Who'd you be doing this for?

The problem with iHeart sports stations is that on many occasions, they don't put much effort into them. KGME used to be THE sports talk station in Phoenix, but now they're just a shadow of themselves.

It was all over facebook this summer.

As to how its affected things.... 1090 seattle is dominate up here now at night and not XEPRS
