Philadelphia ratings

Maybe Ben FM just needs a rebranding? They seem to tweak the music a lot, but will anyone notice when their imaging and positioning (or lack thereof) remains the same? They should position themselves more clearly as a younger, edgier alternative to WOGL. They can own the '90s the same way WOGL owns the '80s, and can emphasize their willingness to play edgier rock. Maybe throw in some more popular '90s hip-hop as well.

What about Entercom's 2 weak stations in town, 1210 AM and 96.5. What do you think Entercom will do with those stations? There's a huge gap between KYW and WPHT in the latest ratings. Yes I know 1210's ratings are up because of the Mid-Terms but it will go down after the elections imo. 96.5 is last among the 6 they own in town.

Maybe it’s just a fluke but has this station ever done well

I know there was a time when their cume was over a million so things must've been going relatively well at that point. But my memory's not great and that may have been 12 or 13 years ago for all I know!

I think Entercom will probably leave those two stations exactly as they are until they come up with something that will make more money. In the case of WPHT, that will be never. So if you really, really, REALLY want (need?) to focus on these stations, I'd suggest you focus on WTDY.

I wonder if Beasley will just sell WBEN

But who would want to buy it? And then what would they do with it? There's no obvious format hole that will make it more lucrative. Is Entercom allowed to buy another station and perhaps use it to put WPHT on FM? (Just kidding.)

Do you think Ben will stay for now. Most adult hits stations do well. Maybe more marketing

Ben's been through plenty of ups & downs. Remember, Beasley's also got the "wall of men" represented by WMGK, WMMR, WPEN-FM, and WXTU so the sales opportunities are not likely to be suffering any time soon.

I can't help but think: Go lighter on the '80s (not gonna beat WOGL), get more imaginative with the '90s (there was a LOT of music and it's not being heard too many other places), and limit stuff like Lady Gaga (I love her but I'm not sure how many people want to hear "Just Dance" between "Blister in the Sun" and "Cradle of Love"). The "Oh Wow" stuff ("Unskinny Bop," for instance--and for crying out loud) should probably be shitcanned for good at this point. LOL.

Again, no obvious format hole. At least not one likely to bring in more revenue. Despite now having two personalities (plus the on-air producer) in the morning, and an afternoon personality, it's still got to be (all things being relative) on the cheaper end to run as part of the cluster.

Not sure which thread this fits in, since there are two about Philly ratings....

There was a thread about the music on BEN a few weeks ago, about it perhaps shifting a bit more pop:

https://www.radiodiscussions.com/sho...889-WBEN-music

And it's possible some of this shifting is what hurt the ratings, although the ratings started to drop a couple months ago.

But BEN had been a little more rock than WOGL, and then WMGK had a big jump over the summer.

So BEN is looking for its spot. Is it pop or rock? The great thing about being a variety hits format is it's all about the mix.

They don't have to completely blow up the format, just adjust the mix to fit the sweet spot.
