Yeah. I don't understand how Miami of all cities doesn't have a rhythmic CHR! Sure, WPOW is one, but they're actually listed as a mainstream CHR according to CBS themselves, not to mention Mediabase. So if they aren't a rhythmic, then who is?
What about 99 Jamz?
That is a pure, full speed ahead Urban station.
Which sort of explains why there isn't much of a need for a Rhythmic CHR in Miami since there's also 103.5 The Beat, another fully blown Mainstream Urban station owned by iHeartMedia.
In Miami, CHR's have traditionally been rhythmic.
This statement goes back to Tanner's Y-100 in the KC and the Sunshine Band era to Tanner's Power 96 until CBS came in and modiefied it. We're talking about nearly 40 years.
The primary appeal of a rhythmic CHR in Miami is Hispanic. The primary appeal of Urban is African American. Both WEDR and WMIB are over 2/3 Black in audience composition; Power 96 is 60% Hispanic and 30% "other"... only 10% Black.
So, in truth, there is room for Power to be a bit more rhythmic than it currently is.
I usually define Rhythmic CHR in a more Urban way, so that's why I thought there may not have been a need for a Rhythmic CHR in a market already being served by 2 Mainstream Urban stations, but I do understand there's a broader definition of the Rhythmic CHR format.
I always thought a WKTU clone in Miami would work. I think WMIA has tried that in the past. But iHeart seems to not stick around with a single format too long on a few of their Miami signals.
You may define "Rhythmic CHR" as being based on pop-sounding country. What is important is how the industry defines Rhythmic CHR.

Note that these are not "urban" stations and they do play lots of material that does not make the Urban charts.
A good comparison is KRRL in LA, which is classified as Urban and KPWR in that market, which is a Rhythmic CHR. Both get over 60% of their listening is from Hispanics and less than 20% is from African Americans... the difference is in the music as a whole.
Mediabase isn't always accurate, Tom. They tend to not update format descriptions for a bit, sometimes even years. No, they're still a rhythmic per Mediabase and still play some songs by Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane, etc.
Pardon my ignorance but Rhythmic CHR is basically up-tempo Top-40 with some mainstream hip-hop blended in, correct?
Basically, yes. And largely targeted towards Hispanics and Caucasians.
