That's the way I do it, also. My Dell computer has three audio connectors on the back. The speakers are to the left, the mike input is in the center, the output for a recording device is to the right. I don't like the volumn it gives, but it works well enough. If your pc doesn't come with these, frequently the speakers have an input for headphones. Try inserting the plug in there. It may overdrive the tape recorder, but its worth a try.
Radio Shack has plugs and Y-connectors for everything.
