WYNY Rebrands As Lite 106.9

This topic caught my attention because the call sign WYNY was previously used by radio stations in the New York metropolitan area. In fact, the original WYNY was an adult contemporary station in New York City from 1977 to 1987, when it became a country station.

I am glad to see that the call sign is used by another station, although the station is in another state.

That's not what the article says. It had NO branding other than its call and frequency and wasn't using the industry term "AC" on air or in imaging.
Stations that use the call letters as their identity are branding. KYW or WCBS or KFI or WGN are brands, based on the older, traditional manner of "naming" a station by its assigned letters rather than a name. One of the first ways of naming a station was to pronounce the calls, such as "wixxie" for WIXY. Then we got station names, like "11-Q" and got calls to go with them such as WIIQ. Finally, we got station names that had little or no relationship with the calls, with the call letters only used as a legal requirement.
