WSNI-Philadelphia Picks-Up John Tesh For Mornings; Is He On His Way To Becoming AC's National Morning Show??

Up to now, stations that have been broadcasting John Tesh's nationally-syndciated show either in the evening hours or overnight (the latter on stations that run Delilah during the evening hours).

But the homepage of WSNI-104.5 ("Sunny 104.5") in Philadelphia is advertising that they are now running Tesh's show in morning drive. This is, as far as I can tell, the first station to run Tesh during daytime hours, never mind mornings. Indeed, as of this writing (4:30 P.M. EST November 4th), the page on Tesh's website listing stations carrying his radio show does not yet list WSNI.

If Tesh's show becomes successful in the mornings for WSNI (and with that station's all-Christmas format having started-up for the season, it may for the next few weeks), Tesh's syndicator may try to convince other AC stations to drop their local morning shows in favor of Tesh.

And with WSNI being A Clear Channel Property, should Tesh succeed in Philly, CC may replace loocal morning shows on other company AC outlets with Tesh.

For many "soft" AC stations, it could even lead to the elimination of local airstaffs: Run Tesh in the morning, Delilah in the evenings, Glenn Hollis overnights, and during middays and afternoon drive, run jockless as a "background" format for at-work listening. The only announcements (station ID's and brief sweepers) would come from an imaging voice.

Just because one station picks up the John Tesh Show, you assume hundreds of other stations may "follow suit"? Come on Joe. You theory is crazy. The elimination of local airstaffs? Even crazier! Many people listen in the morning (and afternoon) for news, traffic, weather, and other importanat information, not about how much chocolate you might eat in a year. Each market is different.

It's all about $$$ and increasingly, stock price. You gotta please The Street.

If broadcasters think they can increase profits by replacing local shows with syndicated fare, some broadcasters will do it. But a few other broadcasters won't go that route, and instead invest in their product, since they know doing so will make money, sometimes a lot of money.

Broadcasters who truly serve their listeners (not as many as there should be) know that sometimes, you have to spend money to make money. These broadcasters do spend money on their local programming, and quite often, are the most successful.

Unfortunately, there aren't as many of these broadcasters as there used to be.

If you feel like this, then why would you suggest that John Tesh would become the next AC national morning show? Whenever a certain thing happens, you assume the same thing will happen again. If A station in B city picks of John Tesh, you assume C station in D city will do the same. It depends on the market! Tesh may do well in Philly, but it may fail miserably in other markets. Since WSNI picked up John Tesh, you assume hundreds of other stations will drop their local morning shows. Ridiculous. The costs may not be lowered that much. Some morning jocks have contracts that may not run out right away.
