So just how many channels can a HD signal run?

There has been various statements made as to how many "channels" you can run on one HD signal. Of course the Hybrid mode allows for 3, but what about if/when you do go all digital? I have heard various statements saying 5 to 8 channels altogether can be run on one HD signal including the main channel. Who is right and wrong?
______________

Let me add in a question here:

If you run a talk station on your main channel (HD-1) in mono, can you pick up some space for an HD-4 (HD-2, and HD-3 both mono).

I beleive you can. You have X amount of bandwidth and you can split it up as you please. I have not looked into HD4 if you run lower bit rates on HD 1 and HD2 as most people want to add music to those channels.

I have HEARD up to 8 if you run strictly digital.

I assume this would be possible. Most of the HD-3 channels are 16kbps, so if you did all your channels at 16kbps per say (instead of the two 48kbps or what not, then yes I think you would be able to squeeze in 4th channel but I dont know (I havent studied the techincal side of IBOC beyond what has been mentioned on various websites).

It is any combination that adds up to not more than 96K.

Enough bandwidth for one choppy, low-res video stream, about sixteen phone calls, or 500 slow to medium speed Morse code streams.
______________

Does that mean if Clear Channel or CBS Radio wanted to run everything at 8kbps on IBOC (yes that would sound aweful) that they could have "12" stations on one FM channel? lol (that means they could typically go against with every station in their market!

LOL!
