SACBEE: Kohl To Take 106.9 To FM Talk

From http://www.sacticket.com/tv_radio/story/13498306p-14338912c.html

Former KFBK operations manager lands at radio station in Bay Area

By Sam McManis -- Bee Staff Writer

Ken Kohl, who resigned Monday as operations manager at KFBK (1530 AM),
talk-1069.gif
will head down the freeway to San Francisco to develop a new FM talk station in the Bay Area.

Kohl, whose contract with Clear Channel to supervise its affiliate stations KFBK and KSTE (650 AM) was close to ending, will leave the stations immediately. He will be program director of an Infinity-owned former Bay Area religious educational station, KEAR (106.9 FM), which is expected to turn into a talk station aimed at a younger demographic once details are worked out.

There also is industry speculation that Kohl will eventually be named the news operations chief at all-news KCBS (740 AM) in San Francisco, also owned by Infinity.

"I leave with mixed emotions," Kohl said. "KFBK involved everything I went into radio for, but I do feel my work is done here. I'm excited about this new challenge in San Francisco."

But, but, but what about the Doghouse and CHR? A poster said it was a fact a few days ago.

...and Jack, and Chill, and moving oldies to 106.9, etc., etc.

I give the TALK format maybe til april of next year, It will never work, the younger demo does not listen to talk radio, they listen to music!!! when will corporate radio get there heads out of their asses and actually give the people what they want???? and maybe the doghouse is going talk radio?????? hell, they did most of that on "wild" anywayz????

When they say "younger," they're not targetting teenagers. They're probably looking at the "younger" crowd that right now listens to Howard Stern (meaning we'll probably see Adam Carolla on 106.9) -- not the ones listening to Rush Limbaugh or Ronn Owens, who tend to skew just under the KABL and KFRC demo. :)

And don't worry, DeeJayMan, Infinity will still have a few more moves left after they flip 106.9. There's still hope for CHR on one of their other freqs, and there's always the chance that {INSERT CALL LETTERS OF ANY OTHER LOCAL RADIO STATION HERE} will finally do right by you.

Still hearing that the Dogs may reappear at Infinity, and also look for some kind of changes at KFRC in the next few days- not necessarily Jack.

I sure hope they have Tom Leykis live 3-7 and Phil Hendrie 7-10pm. I mean they're both funny and topical. After all I consider FM talk "light talk".

Re: SACBEE: Kohl/Bye bye KCBS

If Kohl get his hands on that station, kiss it goodbye - or at least a lot of the staff. You saw how everyone jumped ship from the news talkers up here in Sacramento. I hear he's not the easiest guy to work with.

Ah, the inevitable comment from the fan of something that's over. Dude, go back to the iPod or illegal downloading, like anyone else in younger demos who wants to listen to music. The minute you rely on a radio station to give you the music you want is the day you stop getting the music you want. Corporate radio is not about you or about listeners; it's about money --spending the least to make the most. To Infinity, CHR is not a cost-effective operation.

So it's bye bye to KCBS based on hearsay? Anyone who jumped ship in Sacramento did so because they went to better stations in bigger markets for more pay. Newsroom pay is LOUSY at KFBK and while it's true that it wasn't the happiest newsroom during KK's tenure, who there wouldn't jump at the chance to work at KCBS or KGO?

KCBS is a news delivery system Infinity uses all over the country --it is a long-tested and proven formula and not one likely to be changed. Regardless, insiders at Infinity say Kohl's gig is just the FM, not KCBS.

Talk radio belongs on AM? Talk radio won't work for younger listeners? Emotional opinion, but not rational. Infinity has more experience with FM Talk than just about anyone...it's roster of FM talkers do well...top 10 or better 25-54 in LA, DC, Balt, Dallas...and they succeed in NON STERN dayparts. CC last year put FM talk on in Pittsburgh...it shoots right to the top...

"Younger demos" are concentrated on FM...put a format there that a huge amount of them have never sampled on AM, (because they just DO NOT go there) and you may be surprised. Younger listeners only like music? You must be kidding? Nice stereotyping. And who said FM talk was supposed to just target "younger demos". My guess is they want as many listeners as possible.

BTW, back in the late 70's, people said Top 40 on FM would never work...because no one listened to FM....

Re: Off topic, did you ever get the e-mail?

Also, I'm guessing the Doghouse starts with the brand new country format that is the new KFRC rumor. Elvis can do his fake phone call and call up and challenge people in Stockton to a fight as opposed to calling up people in Fremont like he used to do at KYLD. That was always very thoughtfull and original radio.

Re: SACBEE: Kohl/Bye bye KCBS

LOL...I don't think the KFBK newsroom has ever been happy. Crappy pay, Crappy attitude...Then they burn the rice fields...Wooo-hoooo! Probably one of the
more vicious newsrooms I've ever seen. This was YEARS ago, though...

So do what your semi-lovable moderator does:

Go back and see who predicted what, and then assign them a level of credibility for whatever they say next.<P ID="signature">______________

Or better yet...do what I do...Take all the rumors on one issue together and then just compare your notes. You can sift thru to find the general truth.

Everybody gets things wrong from time to time...It's an internet board, not
the New York Times...
