Interesting. I wonder how much of that, especially on the U.S. stations, actually aired, since most U.S. stations at least were still in the middle of continuous coverage of the JFK assassination. And of course, Lee Harvey Oswald was killed on the 24th as well.

If I'm not mistaken and too lazy to look up, CHFI eventually moved to 680 and later became CFTR. Also, at the time of this schedule was CHUM operating twenty-four hours? I know they started as a daytimer.

You're correct about CHFI becoming CFTR - if I'm not mistaken, the call letter change happened in 1970 or '71, and the station went Top 40 to compete with CHUM in '72. I also believe CHUM was 24/7 by '63.

This is fascinating stuff. Thanks for posting, Bluenoser.

They were a daytimer for quite a few years, too. A check of station histories at the Canadian Communications Foundation shows that CHUM went 24 hours in 1957, the same year they given permission to operate at night (along with a power increase to 2,500 full-time). The following year CHUM's day power was boosted to 5,000 watts, but the increase to 50,000 didn't happen until 1964.

Your memory is fine. The Foundation site shows the call letter change on June 21, 1971. No specific date is mentioned for the switch to Top 40, however, just "early in the year" (1972).

For a while, CHFI/CFTR was just 1000 watts day, and 10000 watts night. CHLO was on 680 1 kW DA-1. CHFI/CFTR paid CHLO to move to 1570 with 10 kW, on CFPL's old frequency. CHLO had an awesome signal on 680 with 1 kW. CFTR gradually upgraded to 50 kW day and night.

Regular broadcasting stopped then, at least on the US side, until Monday, November 25th.
