RADIO MARIA ON THE AIR AT D'IBERVILLE, MISSISSIPPI (NON-COMM)

D'Iberville, Mississippi is on the air!!!
WOLM - With Our Loving Mother

The non-comm FM joins it's sister station, WRMW at
Peshtigo, WI as two expiring Construction Permits that
have beat the deadline by a few days, to begin test
programming.

The stations are owned by 'Friends of Radio Maria'

It is for all intents and purposes broadcasting fulltime....presently airing some pre-recorded archived programming from originator KJMJ Alexandria,LA while it is awaiting delivery and installation of satellite dish and receiver. It came on the air this past Thursday (May 27th) three days before the CP expiration date. Once the sat dish is up and running it will be a fulltime repeater of KJMJ. Hopefully a local studio will eventually be set up to air local live programs fed directly to KJMJ for broadcast.

My apologies for solciting donations but are needed to pay for licensing fees and such. It is my hope any local broadcast employees working in Biloxi area media who are Catholic can help by donations and/or volunteering their talents...and yes I am a volunteer announcer...was not my intention to offend anyone on these boards....enough said.

ERP is 1,000 watts

Mind you that the info is already a bit out of date since it still says "currently off the air" and "no website"...but that's Radio-Locator for you...they can be a bit slow but it will get updated eventually.

RM website has not yet agknoledged WOLM and WRMW since its not yet airing the satellite feed which is the reason why it is airing "special programming" but that should change soon when their sat feeds are finally up and running...they just had to get on the air this week before the Memorial Day deadline.

Freinds of Radio Maria Inc is the New York group which helps start up the new stations...they operate an Italian language FM subcarrier of WKTU New York. ...once established the new licensee is Radio Maria Inc. in Alexandria,LA.

Its international HQ is in Italy where it was founded by Emanuale Ferrario, a lay person who still owns the organization.

This station's reach will be severely circumscribed by 88.1 WUWF Pensacola and Miss Public Radio's 88.1 xmtr south of Meridian.

They knew exactly what they were doing. With a tower site in Biloxi, MS...they
didn't want to waste a lot of signal over the water. With very little investment,
they have the area covered, from a cellphone tower, no less.

It's amazing how, eleven or so years ago, they were able to study coverage
maps, and overlays of percentage of Catholics, and we successful in getting
markets that they'll do well with.

The Wisconsin station is in an area, that has NO Catholic broadcasts, anywhere,
not even on the commercial stations on Sunday mornings...yet the market is 80%+
Catholic! They'll do just fine.

Both places are using 'borrowed' power from the tower owners. They'll have their
own meters in two weeks or so, and the satellite service will begin shortly. There
are a few 'hoops' to jump through at the FCC, including a 'waiver' of the main
studio rule, which they have successfully accomplished several times before.

I didn't even know Swaggart had radio properties until I learned about WTGY up in Charleston in Tallahatchie County.

Seems religious programming is dominated by EMF (K-Love, Air1), Moody, CSN, WAY-FM and American Family Radio. I was surprised to learn that there's been a historical lack of Catholic programming until rather recently throughout much of the country. So I guess this dovetails nicely with Archangel Radio in Mobile and Divine Love in Pensacola.

Dunno if he still owns it, but Swaggart at one time had WQUA 102.1 Citronelle (Mobile County) AL, a C3 that is too far North of Mobile to be of any value (and it can't move any closer). It did r&b oldies at one time (co-owned with WDLT 98.3) and then was a Disney outlet.

He also owns KUUZ, Lake Village, AR which covers the Greenville, MS market.

Swaggert also has WJNS - Yazoo City. Just recently move the site after the old tower fell a few years ago.

RM has had several miracles take place. WHJM (licensed in Anna, Ohio) found a vacant AT&T microwave-relay tower in the nick of time in nearby Botkins so they can get on the air just days before the June 2006 deadline....Still the signal didin't reach Dayton (which was the original intent) but an AM station in Springfield (WULM) came up for sale a year and a half later RM bought that station in the spring of 2008. Interestingly enough K-LOVE also has a translator in SIdney, Ohio which also comes from a cel tower.

Here in Ohio Swaggert still owns WJYM (licensed to Bowling Green but transmitting at Lime City near Toledo.) He too has some forthcoming competition with WNOC "Annunciation Radio" coming up in a couple of weeks.

Catholic radio may be late coming but as I've said before...better late tha never...thanks to Mother Angelica who founded EWTN and John Paul II addressing the need for the new evangelization.

I'm blessed to be a part of it...I did the voice-over work for both WOLM and WRMW running the archived programming until both are on the dish.
