Power 108 airchecks from 1990

Cool airchecks! I believe there were posted here before, but they are always worth checking out again.

There seems to be a new found fascination with Power 108. Not bad for a station that lasted five years.

I wonder what would happen if Power lasted longer instead of flipping to The End.

One of the best stations Cleveland ever had (besides jammin 92 lol).

I enjoyed your airchecks from both stations a while back. Nice to hear Power from when they started in '87 to '91. Do you have any from late '91 to early '92 right until the flip to The End?

I have some old cassettes still floating around. I'll see if I can get them transferred over the next few days.

COOL!!! I was part of the Jim Bosh morning show in the late 80's as well as joining the legendary John Landecke who replaced him in October of '89...I left for Long Island in September of '90, then headed to Charlotte in '91 with former WGAR morning man Jim Shafer...I'm off the air now and teaching high school, but am proud of my 25 years in broadcasting...one wish never fulfilled--never got to work with Kid Leo...but I did work with Gary Dee, Fig Newton, John Dayle, and John Christ (WWWE), and Tom "TK" Kent on the defunct 92Q

That is so cool you got to work with those guys. I bet you had a blast over at those stations. May I ask what was it like at Power?

My time at Power was short lived...I worked for Cat Thomas--very cool PD, always had my back, let me do my thing...it was a learning experience, trying to be part of a funny morning show and still maintain a news sense...I adored working with Bosh and Maria and John Landecker...when I left for Long Island it was time to break free and do my own exploring, as it were, of what my tenure in radio would yield...25 years on air is a very long and interesting career...the industry is totally different today..i don't recommend it to anyone wanting to get into it now

Right, it would have to be for those who are really passionate for the industry. It should also be noted that he or she cannot get into the industry for money.

Appreciate your input. There are those who don't make it past a year or two. Twenty-five is pretty amazing of a run.

Hey Clevelanders...just happened to swing thru here and saw this thread. I posted these airchecks here back in 2010, here they are again. Liz Luke, I remember you well from the morning breakfast flakes!

I remember seeing those when you first posted them. Pretty cool. Thank you for posting them again. I had quite a blast listening to the airchecks.

I've noticed how different the station sounded each year between 1987 and '91. There's quite a change with the jocks, music and imaging. My favorites are the ones with the new program director (Steve Kelly) announcing changes with the station, and another with comparing 108 with WMMS, Majic and Lite Rock. Very creative on their end.

I also like the one from Spring-Summer 1988 with all the songs on there that I still love, including "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz, "Merceded Boy" by Pebbles and "Like the Weather" by the 10,000 Maniacs. I'd never thought that last group would be heard on a CHR station.

Power 108 seemed like an unusual hit music station, going off the usual Top 40 charts at time. It's deserving of them to outlast 92Q/Hot 92, which would be gone in January 1990.

Thank you again for uploading them again. Those airchecks got me hooked on the station. BTW, do you happen to have tapes of 108 from '91 up until the change to The End and WRQC when they were Hot 92 briefly?

Such a walk down memory lane listening to Cat Thomas and his show on Power 108...he's such a great jock and really was fun to work with... :)

Hey CleveFan, glad you enjoyed. I had fun making them, even tho I killed the old tape deck I had while doing so. I do have some more tapes I couldn't get to, up to about Sept 92 when I set sail for Tampa. Need to find an easier way than old school components. Suggestions? I believe there would be some 107.9 The End in there...and yes, here is some Jammin' 92 from 91-92, as well as 108 from 91.

Jammin 92:

108:

107.9 the End was a great station at the beginning. I am trying to remember who the original Program Director was? I know that Rick Michaels came along about a year in as he was already the Assitant PD. For some reason the name Lyndon Abel comes to mind. Anyone else know?

It was Lyndon Abell (or Abel), who originally flipped WPHR to WENZ as a less hit-oriented Rock CHR or some type. The End didn't go full-blown as Modern Rock until after Rick Michaels became PD.

Interestingly, the End aircheck from '92 had a bit of that "Power" spirit left. Thanks PK. I enjoyed it while listening.
