Phoenix Radio Ratings: December 2023

Time for some new fresh leadership?
Time to bring back "live and local" and to not end their broadcast day when Chad & Gaydos sign off.
At KTAR? The first people jettisoned should be money evangelist Ramsey and Mike Lunkhead. Frankly, they're the real problem. Next in line should be idiot boys Gaydos & Chad. Their inane schtick ran its course years ago.

Hmmm.... I think I'll apply to provide "fresh leadership". Good idea Eric.

Could not agree more.

On music stations, how is "local" of any importance? I'd rather hear a national quality talent on a national network.

And how is "live" significant on a music station? Look at Seacrest's show which is not live 90% or more of the time, and uses bits and pieces recorded in advance in order to feature artist available, for example.

Live and local is incredibly significant when it's a talk station. Local ownership or TV and newspapers is dwindling down, which leaves only radio as a local voice. There are some stories that can only be covered locally.

As for music format- live and local matters in music format, too. The best music-format radio has ALWAYS been local. KDKB's "Local Sounds" compilations were as essential to growing up in Phoenix - a tradition upheld by the likes of now-defunct KZON, KEDJ, etc.

The closing scene of (SPOILER) front-runner for Best Picture Oscar features a LOCAL radio broadcast with a LOCAL orchestra. It wasn't phoned in from Westinghouse or NBC or whoever. It was local.

The problem is that local media, whether it's radio, newspapers, or TV, was built and based on local business. Locally owned department stores, hardware stores, electronics stores, and more. What we've seen over the last 50 years is the collapse of local business. It started with WalMart, then Home Depot and Lowes, Macys and Target. More recently, Amazon, eBay, and the other online retailers have replaced local stores. Where can local media go for the money to hire the local people you want to hear?

Even public broadcasting is seeing a drop in donations because people assume local media is free. We see endless complaints about the length of commercial breaks. Those commercials are the only source of income for local media. So every time people complain about spot breaks, or go to online media to escape them, it's another nail in the coffin of local media. The business model of the internet isn't local. The reason why you hear fewer commercials on streaming radio is their spot price is based on a national or even global audience, not local.

So the next time you talk about the importance of local media, the question you should ask is how do they pay for it.

Unfortunately (as you may have already noticed) there are folks who have written off anything "live and local" as all but dead. Even beyond the radio realm. National chains are always better, maximizing profit always wins over any other consideration, and radio would be better if it was like Wal Mart, Amazon, and McDonald's. Generic, homogenized, consolidated, automated, and indistinguishable from one market to the next.

I mean, why would anyone spend money on Pizzeria Bianco when they can get Pizza Hut?

Broomhead redefines moron. And Gaydos & Chad are just inane.

Ramsey is a weird talibornagain tyrant. The whole station is a joke.
