Orlando nightclub shooting kills 50, injures 53

Fifty people were killed and another 53 injured early Sunday when a gunman opened fire in an Orlando nightclub called Pulse that serves a mostly gay clientele.

Local authorities and the FBI are investigating the incident — the worst mass shooting in U.S. history — as a possible act of domestic terror.

Police shot and killed the gunman, Orlando Police Chief John Mina told reporters Sunday morning. He has been identified as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old U.S.-born citizen of Afghani descent living in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The shooting began around 2 a.m. ET, Mina said, and an off-duty Orlando officer working at the club was the first to respond. That officer exchanged gunfire outside the club, after which Mateen entered the establishment.

“That turned into a hostage situation,” Mina said.

More police arrived and broke down a door with an armored vehicle, helping about 30 club patrons escape, Mina said. Officers then shot and killed Mateen.

At least nine officers were involved in the shootout including one who sustained an eye injury when a bullet hit his Kevlar helmet.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said he had declared a state of emergency for the city and has requested the governor do the same for the state.

The mass killing took place just one day after another tragic shooting in Orlando, when gunman Kevin Loibl shot and killed 22-year-old singer and former “The Voice” contestant Christina Grimmie.

That shooting followed a concert at the Plaza Live Theatre, which is a few miles from Pulse.

The first five words that came to me when I hear about this horrific even were "That could have been me." - I was a DJ at nightclub for over a year and I helped out in other ways for a couple years after that. While the night club where I worked was quiet and rarely had trouble it was always at the back of my mind - "What if some crazy person came in with a gun?"

Then I immediately thought about all my friends who are apart of the LGBTQ community - Brandon, Victoria, and Jake. They are among many people I know who are apart of the LGBTQ community.

You won't believe what I heard on the news.

Someone called all the victims pedophiles and celebrated their deaths.

At home, my post office doesn't open until noon. The college next door (the only reason we got to keep our post office) had its flags at half-staff. The post office did not, until the person working there arrived. This happens every time the flag needs to be at half-staff.

Whoever does news at the top of the hour on KKOV didn't mention the story this time.

They never say who they are, but they give a name. Chaz Henry is one of the anchors.

Sadly this rant originated in my area Sacramento and there's a fiasco over this. At some point everybody will order this pastor out of the closet.

And now it is being reported that the shooter's current wife apparently knew his intentions beforehand and did not let the authorities know.

Much more to this story I believe.

Apparently all three of the above are true.

The shooter was in-the-closet, according to his ex-wife and former classmates from school.
He was motivated by radical Islam (made a phone call and Facebook posting pledging allegiance to ISIS)
His current wife did know about the planned attack, and may be charged.

To relate this to broadcasting, anyone notice the NBC logo that is shown onscreen during their shows during the past couple of weeks? It says "Orlando" and I think there's one of those ribbons like with breast cancer.

Damn this is insane 1 month after the Orlando attacks

Its insane because we were warned about other terrorist attacks by ISIS. Its insane you think beheading is an ISIS tactic but it turns out to be insane people who did this because of other reasons.
