Obit: Lord Marmaduke Hussey; led BBC, Times Newspapers

Marmaduke Hussey, the former chairman of the British Broadcasting Corp. and managing director of Times Newspapers, has died at age 83.

Lord Hussey, a Grenadier Guards officer who lost a leg in the Allied landings at Anzio, Italy, in World War II, was educated at Trinity College, Oxford. Trained as a journalist, he was chief executive and managing director of Times Newspapers, owner of the Times of London, from 1971 to 1980.

Lord Hussey was appointed chairman of the BBC in 1986, in part because of his connections to the Conservative Party, then in power under the leadership of Margaret Thatcher. During his time as BBC chairman, he sacked Alasdair Milne as director general in 1987 after a series of rows with the government over the BBC's independence.
