The voice of longtime San Diego Traffic Reporter and Newsman, Mike Hancock, was suddenly silenced with his passing at his Azalea Park home on Sunday, Nov. 14. He was found dead in his home by a friend. For almost 15 years, Hancock was heard on IHeart Radio’s San Diego stations, KOGO, KGB, KIOZ, KMYI, and on San Diego State University’s radio stations, KPBS (San Diego) and KQVO (Calexico).
Besides his broadcast reporting work, he was involved with the founding of San Diego’s community radio station started by Activist San Diego, KNSJ-FM 89.1, and was its first news director.
When he was not on-the-air, Hancock was a community gardener, a Canyonlands community clean up leader, an avid cyclist, and alternative transportation advocate and organizer, an LGBTQ rights promoter, an environmentalist, and a cat lover.
Hancock studied at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, after studying radio broadcast journalism at San Diego City Community College. Previous to that, he studied music and psychology at Cal State University East Bay.
A celebration of life is anticipated to be scheduled at the beginning of 2022.
