Max Password Sharing Crackdown Is Coming, Warner Bros. Discovery Says

Note this will be released in 2025 and is meant to cut losses in streaming.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max will join competitors Netflix and Disney+ in cracking down on password sharing.

JB Perrette, WBD’s CEO and president of global streaming and games, said the initiative would launch later this year with a broader rollout in 2025.

“We think, relative to the scale of our business, it’s a meaningful opportunity,” Perrette said during Morgan Stanley’s 2024 Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco on Monday.

The push to crack down on password sharing comes as Warner Bros. Discovery narrowed its streaming loss to $55 million during its fourth quarter of 2023, down from a loss of $217 million a year ago. For the full year, it swung to a profit of $103 million, compared to a loss of $1.59 billion in 2022.

everyone is cracking down on password sharing cause it's cutting into their money, just like how streaming services are adding a "with ads" tier to their paywall. the password sharing thing is considered "Piracy" in their eyes cause it allows people who aren't paying for it to borrow someone's account and watch content that they should be paying for. password sharing should only be limited to those who live in the same household as well.

I do agree with your opinions regarding where the password sharing should be limited to.

What about situations like someone who has a child who is a college student and wants them to use the household account? That seems like a reasonable use. Also what about someone taking their streaming device on trips?

Probably a silly fear, but I fear this password sharing crackdown could even extend to one's own household, meaning that if you're subscribed, everyone will have to watch the same thing in the same room on the same account-- no more family members moving to different sets to see different things, even if what's on the main set is something they don't care for.
