LA AM for sale

If I’m in charge? 92.3. IHeart paid millions for nfl media rights, only to have the most important game of the year on am only?
Fair point, but it's a 50,000 watt AM at 640 on the dial that's #2 in the latest ratings. It's not like they bumped it to KEIB. And as you said, L.A. 's not a sports town.

LA is not much of a rock town these days; you have to think whoever falls short between 98.7 and 106.7 would look at sports as an option.

It would be a waste of time. There‘s not a giant need for sports in L.A. Plus kroq is a cash cow and 98.7 gets great ratings. Anyone who’s from or lives in L.A. knows it’s just an entertainment town. I don’t think it was even a good idea to flip 97.1 to knx

So what then? Just let KNX’s audience die off and the station with it?

KROQ's billings collapsed this year as it's decline became solidified at the bottom. So far, none of the rebuild efforts seem to have made much of a difference... and even if it did, it takes at least half a year of good results to get back on agency buy lists.

Not really. What you have is about 50% of the under-55 market being Hispanic and not into the same music or kinds of sports as Blacks or non-Hispanic whites.
I don’t think it was even a good idea to flip 97.1 to knx
That one was a good idea to preserve high billing, which the prior format did not have.

its still far cheaper for Audacy to keep kroq than it is building an entire sports station with no guarantee of good ratings.

Amp/Now was billing decently enough at the time of the filp. Why eliminate another source of revenue for a station that’s not guaranteed growth on FM.

L.A. isn’t a news/talk town either. Has audience grown since the simulcast? knx seemed to do fine on am on its own financially
The trouble is that it would never gain new audience going forward. The total number of people listening weekly to all the AM stations in Los Angeles that are not simulcast combined is less than the weekly listenership of KOST, KBIG or KRTH individually.

It’s like a mall where fewer and fewer people shop. Eventually, even if you’re Nordstrom, you start to suffer. KFI’s weekly cume was 1.8 million 12 years ago. It’s 633,000 now.

No, it was not billing well. It was averaging in the low 1's for the last two years prior to the switch and billing was declining dramatically.

shocked they bought 710 and not 1110 in a single buy.
I’m not. They totally overpaid for 710 but I doubt they are even paying a dime for the 1110 simulcast. If there was a LMA we’d have heard about it long ago.

Nathan, there's some kind of compensation involved for the simulcast. Disney's not just gonna foot the power bill and other expenses for keeping 1110 on the air for nothing.

Then, what kind of town is LA? Or is there simply no consensus as to what kind of town LA is?
Marcos... It's a great weather town that canvases an immense geography and has a high proportion of immigrants from other parts of the country/world. This means people spend more time outdoors... and on the road. Thus, TSL can be high, while local loyalties can be lower. The 'industry' here is entertainment, but its impact is more on film and live performance than on-air. Population size overall coupled with those who came from elsewhere mean LA does not have a sense of a village with deeply embedded local loyalties and memories. Other large cities like Boston have much more of an 'our town / our heritage' mentality... and that is borne out in their local sports coverage and media.

Bingo.

As early as the 1960s, the line on L.A. was "70 suburbs in search of a city."

In 1960, 78 percent of Los Angeles County was white---a large number of them were midwesterners who worked in the Aerospace industry.

Today, non-Hispanic whites make up 27.8 percent of the county's population. 224 languages are spoken.

Even if you break those people up into groups by heritage, the concerns and lifestyles of any one of those people living in Sylmar is likely to be different from another living in Santa Monica, which will bear little resemblance to (pick a place).

Before 1980, weren't Hispanics considered "White" and therefore affecting the percentages?

Yes... good observation!

It was not until the 1980 Census that the invented/redefined/recycled term "Hispanic" was used to enable measurement and compliance with all the new legislation that protected and gave opportunities and benefits to minorities.

You're correct, semoochie! Still, I think we can agree that there is enormous diversity in Los Angeles and that it has been increasingly diverse over our lifetimes. And that's part of what makes it difficult to say "L.A. is a (fill in the blank) town" in terms of sports, media, or whatever.
