John Michael Montgomery

Are any country stations discussing John Michael Montgomery's DUI charges in Lexington, Kentucky Thursday? Does that really matter to the average fan if any singer has a similar situation? According to the Lexington paper, he pleaded 'not guilty' although he was reported to be driving erratically, hit the curb several times, smelled of alcohol & failed the breathalizer test. They also said he was polite to the officers and cooperative, and they helped him avoid the press after he was released which they describead as their usual procedure.

I hope that if he does have a problem he can turn it around & it doesn't affect his career.

It's getting mentioned on our station, but not in a scandalous sort of way.

Frdiay and this weekend, it was "just the facts" on the charges.

Where the story has gone for us, though, is more of the lifestyle aspect of it. By that, I mean that most of our listeners have had a DUI or some relatively minor brush with the law...or their brother has...or the neighbor lady...you get the gist. COuntry listeners -- more than any other -- want their stars to be real people...and they are, but that means some bad has to come with the good. They relate to John Michael more as a person now, not just as a "star."

This isn't the Mindy "What the Hell Has She Done with Her Life NOW" McCready sort of freak-show. It's real life happening, and real life isn't always pretty. Since no one got hurt, we can focus on how lucky he is that it wasn't worse. Without being apologists for the incident, we can use it as an opportunity to connect with listeners who have experienced similar things.

And again in '98 or '99...he recorded "Choices" as a result. On the same CD as "Wild Irish Rose" I think.
