Jack Edwards to retire

Jack Edwards, Boston Bruins play-by-play announcer for 19 years on NESN, will retire at the end of this season.

In many ways, he was the John Sterling of current hockey broadcasters, and now both have retired.

I know a lot of people hate shameless "homer" announcers like Edwards, but I'm fine with them on team broadcasts. Before his still-undiagnosed problem severely affected his announcing abilities, he was enthusiastic and entertaining, and painted colorful word pictures of what he was viewing through his black-and-gold lens on the ice. Rick Jeanneret (Sabres), Mike Lange (Penguins), Chuck Kaiton (Whalers/Hurricanes) and Dave Mishkin (Lightning) all let their loyalties show in their play-by-play, and were (or in Mishkin's case, still are) a reason to tune in to a game I'd otherwise have little interest in.
