J105 Boise To Flip To Jack-FM

Lotus Communications will flip Classic Rock “J105” 105.1 KJOT Boise ID to Variety Hits “105.1 Jack-FM” on Monday, March 15.

KJOT ranked seventeenth in the Boise market with a 2.2 share in the Fall 2020 Nielsen Audio ratings. The flip will place it in direct format competition with Iliad Media Group’s “96.1 Bob-FM” KSRV Ontario, which currently ranks fourth in the market with a 4.7 share. The move also creates some breathing room for Lotus clustermates in Rock “100.3 The X” KQXR and AAA “94.9 The River” KRVB.

I'm not sure if there are any other markets where two Adult Hits stations compete. As a Classic Rocker, KJOT had previously competed with 96.9 The Eagle KKGL. There are a few markets where Classic Rock stations compete, including Denver, where both do well.

Now, 96.9 The Eagle will have Classic Rock to itself as KJOT begins competing with "Bob FM 96.1" KSRV in Adult HIts. Boise listeners will have to choose between Jack FM and Bob FM.

Boise is a Western market that has so many FM signals, like Salt Lake City and Phoenix. Those cities have about 1 1/2 times more FM signals as much larger markets like Minneapolis and Baltimore, that are hemmed in by other nearby cities. Boise is pretty much on its own for hundreds of miles around. So it can have a station every step up and down the FM dial. And it has room for TWO Adult Hits outlets.

It's funny you mention that because I was out in Boise last week and was surprised by the number of stations on the dial for such a small market. I will say, the region is growing, as many regions are in the Mountain West.

600K people in the Boise metro. A lot of stations to serve a relatively small population. I wonder how billing goes in such situations. In Eastern Washington, Spokane (the second city in my state) is in a similar situation... A lot of FMs. Same size as Boise, too.

In my opinion KJOT's still very classic rock based but now with Pop songs mixed in.
