HD radio power consumption

I am considering purchasing an HD radio and am eyeing the Radiosophy brand. I noticed they all consume alot of power because none of them can run off batteries. Perhaps this question should be directed to an engineer: As new models become available, will it be possible to reduce the power consumption to enable battery use, or is there something inherit in the design of digital radios that would render normal battery use impossible? Thanks in advance.

I had this discussion with the CEO of Radiosophy.

Yes the radios use a lot of power right now. What the high power draw is I am not sure as I am not privy to the insides. I was told they are working on changing the power draw. And where that sits as of now I do not know.
