Florida passes law to limit political shows

It's official bill 1220 has passed the Florida Senate and states if you quote a unidentified source in news or during your radio show you are liable for suit. As many read it even if the quote is true the fact that it's not identified is assumed as false and subjects the talk station or the journalist to a law suit. In Florida journalists are no longer protected. One Florida host has announced the political talk format may be dropped.

Reminder that the first amendment says 'Congress shall make no law abridging freedom of the press.' This law will not last very long.

Florida legislators are attempting to control the press. It won't work.

The law could backfire and hurt conservative media, as seen in the recent Fox News lawsuit:

Wonder how this will impact nationally syndicated programs and nattional news organizations (eg CNN, NY Times, CBS News) that distribute their product in FL?

I think that's kinda the point.

Remember, this is the state that is currently in a battle with Disney (a media company) over control of land and a business that they own...for no other reason than that the House of Mouse hosts a pride day.

It might not impact national news organizations overall, but if you want to do business in the Sunshine State? They want you to conform.

An odd move for a "pro-business" party.

It's a bit more than that: Disney was given total control over a large area of land where they were allowed to operate as if Disney was an independent territory, sort of like a county. The could even authorize their own airport or a nuclear power plant.

Although they never did. In the meantime, the state has benefited greatly from the park, building a toll road from the airport to the park, and a 5% hotel tax on all rooms. Seems like the state now wants to bite the hand that feeds it.

Keep in mind that at the time Disney built the park, neither the county or the state had the resources to build all the infrastructure required for the park. Disney took on all the expense for that themselves.

Of course, almost no one doing live radio takes the time to cite chapter and verse on their sources.

Is that the same as citing "anonymous sources"?
If Sean Hannity says "some people say crime in NYC is higher today than it was in the late 80s" without stating explicitly who says that, has he violated this law?

My guess is no. This is specifically targeted at enterprise reporting, which often exposes corruption in the halls of power, and which often relies on anonymous sources and leaks.

I think this is a bit of an odd law to have been suggested by a republican governor and passed by republican majorities that rule both state houses, when the biggest violator is Donald Trump.

It's long been part of his "schtick" that if he wants to make a claim about someone or a group that's really over the top, he never makes the accusation himself. He often says "People are saying that...." or "I've heard that people have claimed that..." but he never cites his sources and never explains exactly who those "people" are or where he's heard this. Of course, in 99% of the cases he's made it up and pulled it out of thin air, but yeah...

The other half of this law has to do with defining a public person. Trump hates that he can't sue more people because he's considered fair game because he's a public figure. The new law would make it easier for Hunter Biden to sue Mark Levin.

Correct. The whole purpose of the first amendment was to put a check on a tyrannical government from passing laws against its citizens, which is exactly what the Florida legislature has been doing. Laws passed against all of the previously 'protected minorities,' now viewed as being 'woke.'
