Bedford Buys KFRC ?

BARHOF says Bedford purchased KFRC in 1991; however, others have noted that it was in 1993.

Which is the correct year that RKO ended its ownership?
Sale filed March 2003, granted April 2003 and closed May 2003.

According to this edition of Radio & Records from 1993, KFRC was bought by Peter Bedford in 1990 and sold to an affiliate of Goldman Sachs in 1993.
And they sold it to Infinity in 1995 and Infinity merged with CBS in 1996
So, now we have three possible Bedford takeover dates?
But only one right out of FCC data.

Sale filed March 2003, granted April 2003 and closed May 2003.
That was sale to Alliance, followed by sale in 1995 to Infinity.
In 1990 RKO sold to Peter Bedford.
The next sale in 1993 was Bedford after renaming of the to Coast Broadcasting.
Coast sold to Alliance, whch sold to Infinity two and a half years later.

There was a proposed sale in 1988 to Daytona Group, but it apparently did not close.

After that, the name chaged as Infinity joined CBS and CBS became part of Viacom. Then in 2005 it went to Family.

This gets complicated because once you're in the 1990s, the question is KFRC AM or FM?

Bedford, as noted above, did agree to buy KFRC-AM from RKO in 1990, with the deal closing in late March of 1991. So, yes, BARHOF is correct.

But---Bedford also bought 99.7 FM (then KXXX, before that KYUU) from Emmis and launched an oldies station with the call letters KFRC-FM on March 4, 1991---more than three weeks before the AM deal closed.

Bedford kept the stations separate---Oldies on the FM, the standards "Magic 61" format on the AM.

Alliance bought the combo in 1993, and in August of that year, dumped "Magic 61" and began an Oldies simulcast, apart from A's games, which were carried on the AM only.

As David notes, Infinity bought them in 1995, the CBS/Infinity deal closed December 31, 1996.

When CBS wanted to buy KOVR, Channel 13 in Stockton/Sacramento, it needed to divest a big signal and it chose KFRC-AM, selling it to family for $35 million and Family's KEAR (106.9 FM).
