License Renewals

The following stations filed for renewal over four years ago but the licenses have not yet been renewed:

  • KHRR 40.x Tucson (NBC Telemundo License LLC)
  • KJPO-LD 49.x Tonopah (Iglesia Manmin Toda La Creacion USA Inc.)
  • KTAZ 39.x Phoenix (NBC Telemundo License LLC)
  • KBLR 39.x Paradise NV (Telemundo Las Vegas License LLC)

Already an update: KVPA-LD was granted its construction permit yesterday to move to channel 34.

A few questions, please.
Is there currently or soon to be Rf 28 in Phoenix?
What is the call sign?
Where can I find recently updated information on
translators, transmitters, contour maps, etc, etc?
Many Thanks,
Joe

KCOS-LP is still licensed for analog operations on channel 28 in Mesa, with transmitter faciliities on Usery Mountain. In reality, the station hasn't put out a signal in about 10 years, yet they retain their license.

On the Gila River reservation, an RF channel 28 digital construction permit was approved at the Gila River Telecommunications office site at Allison Rd. and 56th St., in the Chandler area, but no station has been built yet.

They were on Usery Mountain? I thought they were in Casa Grande. I barely was able to receive a signal from them in Ahwatukee, but the old KUSK translator on Channel 17 from there was their best signal in the Tempe/Ahwatukee area back in the day.

The reason why I asked was K28OA-D, a Mingus translator for KTVK, is now directional
to the NorthEast. On Rf 38, it was non-directional. People in Prescott, like myself, who
now get a 2 edge signal on Rf 11, also KTVK, and those in Prescott Valley have a really
hard time getting a decent signal. I had thought, perhaps, that a Phoenix station was
either in use or about to move to Rf 28. A good place for up to date contour maps?????

KCAB-LP 28 was in Casa Grande, broadcasting from near downtown. KCOS-LP 28 was on Usery Mtn. and had Spanish-language Christian programming.

I was sad to see KCAB shut down. They were the local voice Pinal County really needed.

I was up in Prescott Valley Friday and was able to get a reading on K28OA-D. Measuring from the north parking lot of the Prescott Valley Event Center, I had a signal strength of 82% and signal quality of 100%. It was one of the stronger stations coming off Mingus Mtn.

Looking at the last technical specs as K38AI-D and the current specs as K28OA-D, the channel 28 signal is actually less directional than the channel 38 signal was. Both were and are directional; channel 38 put the maximum 100% signal to a bearing of 65° true, with minima of 42% signal at 195° and 295° true and 55% signal right at Prescott Valley at 245° true; channel 28 also puts the maximum 100% signal to 65° true, but no less than 64% to its minima at 185° and 305° and better than 70% in the direction of Prescott Valley.

Is it possible that you could be getting interference from K28CW-D Flagstaff?

Interference from K28CW-D in Flagstaff certainly makes sense. I wish I could understand why
the K28OA-D signal is directional toward K28CW-D. Perhaps there is some beam tilt that
gives Prescott Valley a better signal???

Worth noting that on November 5, the IFT approved a change that will affect all Telemax transmitters. It approved a request from the Sonoran state government to subsume all of the transmitters (except XEWH) under one concession operating on mostly one channel.

The callsign for these will be XHSGU-TDT, the callsign associated with the Guaymas station. Many of them will also be moving to RF 18 to match. (Notably, XHRCS will likely be stuck on 30 due to XHMEX.)

A couple of other states (Nuevo León and Chiapas) also now have these, what I call "common-concession state networks". They remove a bunch of callsigns from the books and reduce the paperwork load, which for Telemax with 58 public concessions is probably quite high.
