A day in the life of a lamptimer

So does this spell the end of the Lamptimer board Yikes! Will the new mondo FM signal call for a complete shutdown at sunset to save power. Will critical hours really be critical.

I can here the promo now:

"At this time we conclude our broadcast day. We continue programming on the the frequency on 92.7 MHz. Join us again sometime tomorrow (depending on the time of year) for another broadcast of the Lumberyard 60's."

Okay so the promo needs a little work.

I bet if they get a 1.2 55+ with the FM. The lamptimer will get a full signal, and the lumberyard will be brokered Korean programming 9 till 4:45 with Benny Hinn from 6 till 8 weekday mornings.

YIKES, indeed! The thought of brokered Korean programming PLUS Benny Hinn has my fez a spinnin'. Since the name change to Oldies 92~Seven, they've been giving the translator ID along with KAZG and KDKB HD~Two every hour. While the reference to 14 in a row has been yanked, they continue to call the station "more than KOOL". Nurse Jeff and I'm sure the suits at See B.S. are fine tuning 94~Five in anticipation of the range war to come. Stay tuned to this thread for continuing coverage!

On Friday (Feb 05) I noticed there is no longer a :30+ delay on 92.7 vs. 1440. 92.7 is, however, still in mono (reports have been that it always was, and always will be, in mono).

And if catfish (lower case "c") has indeed left the building, will we ever learn any more about the current goings-on at the Lumberyard and associated HD2s and translators? Will we have to ask Mother Hubbard? Can the Stevemeister shed any details?

Friday morning (Feb 05) I decided to give KOOL-FM a bit of a listen, just to see who was "auditioning" for the dude part in the AM drive shift (someone was on with Maria, but I don't know who it was).

What I did notice is what seemed to be a greater presence of the '70s, and less 80s crap. (But no '60s, of course. Guess it was the wrong time of day for KOOL to spin Bang 545.)

So did I actually hear some change in the music flow, or should I just go back to ignoring 94.5 and return to 92.7?

I suggest to all translator operators they operate in mono. Better coverage, and less noise.

Solid advice. But Bang 545 does sound better in stereo, so guess we'll have to wait until it gets played on KOOL, KESZ or KSLX to get that presence so lacking in mono. And if you really want an audio treat, try it in quadraphonic sound...you'll be able to smell the green grass behind the stadium!

Whilst out and about in the Gremlin, Nurse Jeff and I caught The American Breed Bending and Shaping the audio on Oldies 92~Seven. Not only was the song in stereo, but the "ST" light was illuminated on our dial. We're thinking some of the station's songs are mixed in stereo, others in mono. And as far as that "ST" display goes, what further proof do you need? It's either in Stereo or the "D" in "STD" is burned out!

Yes indeedy, the loss of catfish (lower case "c") is almost as great a loss as Edd Byrne's signature song from Lumberyard 14~Forty's playlist. YIKES!

Because we had nothing better to do with our time on Saturday, Nurse Jeff and I made it a point to catch the sign on and sign off of KAZG, aka Lumberyard 14~Forty. Shortly before 7am an English language talk show could easily be heard on the nightwave signal. Straight up at seven the carrier comes on and we're tapping our collective toes to the already in progress Brown Eyed Girl (that song should be played more often).

If you think that Brown Eyed Girl is good, you should hear it with that abrasive vocal removed. It's sweet!

Very easy to do since most or all of the instruments are hard panned and the vocal is the only thing in mono.

BANG 545 without Van Morrison? YIKES!...that's like a Gremlin without rusted quarter panels. Just not the same.

Gotta love that 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty, right Doc?

Nothin' beat the AMC Buyer Protection Plan. When it came down to choosing between a Pinto, Vega or Gremlin, it was a no-brainer for the clueless Middle Eastern Men of the Media. And that radio dial was locked on KDOT 14~Forty during the day, and KOMA 15~Twenty at night.

The 'miners will be in Mesa with the Monkees! Too bad Thursday 9/15 is a school night  or I'd be "ext"-ing them like crazy. Here's the document I found in my spam box (obviously the nationwide Mother Hubbard search for a competent proofreader has turned up nothing so far):

Will this be the venue for the unveiling of the rumored inflatable Goldminer mascot?

How the mighty have fallen. 49 years ago they played to a sellout crowd at the Madhouse on McDowell, and a series episode was made from the concert. Now what's left of them (all three, or just Dolenz and Nesmith and/or Tork?) are at the Mesa Arts Center? They couldn't even book one of the casinos?

Per Rolling Stone, Mike Nesmith will play with the band one last time, the next night (9/16) in LA, then officially retire from the Monkees. He's not with any other part of the tour. So the "band" appearing in Mesa will be just Dolenz and Tork, along with other backing musicians.

I got a chance to speak with Nesmeth last year. Very nice guy, very unaffected by whatever fame he got from the Monkees. He still makes his own music, and is far more interested in things outside of the band. No surprise that he's retiring. It's really all Micky's group now. And Micky can be difficult. Of the four, he had the biggest ego.

It certainly didn't hurt that he inherited $25M from his mother, who had invented Liquid Paper. With that kind of dough, a person can do whatever he wants.

Dolenz was the only one of the four with an American TV track record (Circus Boy in the '50s). He probably let that fame go to his head even before The Monkees hit it big. His father had been a character actor, so I'm guessing that he knew the ins and outs of show biz more than the others.

Davy Jones was somewhat well-known, but mostly in the UK. He was hired to be "The Star" of the show before any of the others were selected, and had appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on 2/9/64 -- the same night as The Beatles' US debut. Nesmith and Tork were the only truly talented musicians in the group, but both were relative unknowns at the time.

That fortune has apparently grown to $50 million, through shrewd investments. Nesmeth is in his mid-70s (as all of them are.) And he doesn't wear the wool hat anymore...or at least he didn't the day I spoke with him. One thing I'd forgotten is that he wrote Different Drum for Linda Ronstadt. He also did some work with Bob Dylan. Very talented guy.

I thought the wool hat had disappeared sometime during the first season of the show. IIRC, it was a gimmick that ended up going nowhere.

Obviously, the "mighty have fallen" even further if they don't get any airplay -- I'd be hard-pressed to think of a single terrestrial AM/FM in the Phoenix area that has played the Monkees very good new album. Not even post-flip KDKB did, despite the involvement with the guy from Weezer. In Brian Wilson's case, it's perfectly understandable (that was a terrible album despite all the guest appearances). So, if you're going to chastise The Monkees for choice of venue, at least have the consistency to point some of that snark in the direction of all the clueless MD's in this town who could have helped them sell out Talking Sticks Arena downtown. Country's the only music format in this town that stays fresh and relevant: remind me again why KDKB can't stay current on their adds like KMLE and KNIX do.
