“Days of our Lives” to move the hourglass to Peacock

To be replaced by "NBC News Daily" on free-to-air NBC affiliates. Given the time slot, I'd expect lots of soft features and consumer news along with fawning interviews with actors or entertainers with shows on NBC or Peacock, little or no hard news.

Not necessarily. GMA3 is actually a better balanced news program than the mothership. It resembles the old-school morning shows with some actual stories and some lighter fare in balance. No one expects a daily 60 Minutes, but there are different ways this could play out.

Not surprised here there’s been speculation that this has been a long time coming. Not to mention more people were watching Days on streaming anyways.

Zucker didn't cancel Days, and he hasn't been with NBCUniversal in a very long time, so it's hard to see how his opinions matter now.

If he wanted to he would have. He was evaluating the circumstances at the time and the best financial interest of the network. Circumstances changed.

LOL “circumstances changed” as in you mean having Jay Leno be on five nights in primetime at 10PM?

Zucker was a disaster and was rightly fired from NBC.

As for Days of Our Lives itself, who knows what the future holds. The show is on contract for another year with NBCU, but with it being on Peacock Premium I can’t see it bringing in any new subscriptions especially as Peacock is actually dying itself with heavy losses as of late. SONY and Corday still own the show and could probably shop it around but I don’t see a show streaming five days a week as something sustainable long term at all. More like it would have to be limited runs/arcs and would need to be on a bigger streamer with more of a variety, sort of like General Hospital is on Hulu.

Where do you get your information that Peacock is "dying"?

Days itself is a dead show waking.

Oh no doubt about it. I figured this was going to happen to Days eventually. The pert I didn’t expect was there seemed to be zero notice. A nearly 60 year old show just dumped from the network. Many of the viewers will not be going to Peacock. Is this just a way for them to kill the show off without getting as much backlash?

But business is business of course.

Where do you get your information that Peacock is "dying"?

Here’s a couple links for you in the past week:

I remember back in 2012 or so when a company called Prospect Park streamed new episodes of All My Children and One Life to Live, which had both been cancelled by ABC. These episodes were aired on OWN about a week or two after streaming. I think Prospect Park's heart was in the right place, but their business model was flawed.

In other words, another hour of network daytime TV turned over to bland, garbage chit chat, oozing over some "who cares" reality TV star, because the show is too lame to attract any real celebrity. I'd rather listen to nails scratching across a chalkboard for an hour, than to watch that crap. At least "Days" offered silly escapism, especially when it was really needed during the pandemic.

So, who thinks this is just the start? How many other serials like these will be heading to streaming?

I suspect we have a geriatric audience for these shows. Is this one way to drag these people to streaming services?

NBC O&O stations have been running Days for years. It will be moved exclusively to Peacock starting Monday September 12th, which coincides with the start of the new daytime season. 40% of the Days audience have already been time-shifting the show. Peacock will also allow for watching past episodes:

NEW YORK – Aug. 3 – NBC is evolving its daytime programming lineup with the move of “Days of Our Lives” to stream exclusively on Peacock and the launch of “NBC News Daily” in the drama’s former network timeslot.

Starting Sept. 12, Peacock will become the exclusive home of the fan-favorite drama “Days of Our Lives.” For the first time ever, all new episodes of the 58-time Emmy Award-winning drama will debut on Peacock daily with the show’s robust library already available to stream for Peacock Premium subscribers. The historic move to Peacock creates the ultimate destination for daytime fans to access the library, new episodes and Peacock Original “Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem” in one place.

Also beginning Sept. 12, in the timeslots previously occupied by “Days of Our Lives,” “NBC News Daily” will debut across NBC stations. NBC News will provide signature world-class reporting and breaking news coverage in a first-of-its kind, live in most markets mid-day news offering. “NBC News Daily,’’ an hourlong program anchored by NBC News’ team of award-winning journalists, including Kate Snow, Aaron Gilchrist, Vicky Nguyen and Morgan Radford, will provide viewers with up-to-the-minute national and international news, with the option for NBC stations to add local news. NBC News Daily” will also be streamed simultaneously on NBC News NOW and Peacock.

“This programming shift benefits both Peacock and NBC and is reflective of our broader strategy to utilize our portfolio to maximize reach and strengthen engagement with viewers,” said Mark Lazarus, Chairman, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “With a large percentage of the ‘Days of Our Lives’ audience already watching digitally, this move enables us to build the show’s loyal fanbase on streaming while simultaneously bolstering the network daytime offering with an urgent, live programming opportunity for partners and consumers.”

NBC owned stations will announce their specific daytime schedule soon.
