Riverside-San Bernardino age 6+ overall:

  • KOST still coasting on the remnants of its annual holiday spike
  • KROQ still trying to catch KYSR
  • KKJZ and KUSC - two music intensive non-comms who are both doing nicely
  • 103.1 has done better with formats prior to Viva
  • KDAY ahead of KPWR = wow!
  • KFI gets a big boost at start of election year (proportionally KEIB / KRLA see big boosts too - but their #s are so much smaller)
  • Too bad Salem doesn't move popular The Fish over to its flailing full market 99.5 and then sell off 95.9 back to a local broadcast entity

Why would they do that? KKLA is their flagship station in Salem’s flagship format. It’s been in that format for more than three decades and literally funded the Salem company we know today.
And it has been posted here by an authoritative source that Salem is selling stations, and that all/some of the "FIsh" operations may already be undergoing due diligence.

For all of the discussion about KROQ’s performance over the years, I haven’t seen much about KRRL’s. Unless they’re doing well in a certain demographic, absolutely terrible.

100.3 is (barely) beating 105.9. In LA. There doesn’t seem to be anything Meruelo can do to stop the bleeding. Ditto for iHeart and 92.3, but not as bad.

Regarding Salem’s flagship format - I thought it was conservative talk?

No, Christian Teaching and Talk has always been Salem's "foundational" format (their word, not mine). Early on, many of these stations did carry some music programming too, but the block programming time slots sold to non-profit ministries is absolutely the core of Salem's business and always has been.

But nothing in radio is forever, maybe one day the Conservative Talk becomes the primary or sole focus.

Wonder if CCM KLTY in DFW might be part of such deals. Might open the door for EMF’s K-Love to finally enter that market, and have a built-in, ready to go audience that would remain with the station.

Let's remember, the goal of most Christian radio stations isn't ratings. It's donations. And apparently their fans are sending in the cash. We don't know what KKLA-FM is bringing in but we assume it's a lot of money. The other Christian talk and teaching station in the market, KWVE-FM and its parent organization, Calgary Chapel, just bought 1110 AM from Disney. In addition to 107.9 and 1110 AM, it has FM stations in Temecula (KSDW 89.9) and Barstow (KWTH 91.3).

Look at how Christian radio networks are buying up FM stations in large markets. In the last decade, K-Love's parent company, the Educational Media Foundation, has spent millions of dollars buying FM stations in most of the large markets, including 100.3 Los Angeles. Family Life Broadcasting last year bought an FM station from Cumulus in Detroit, 93.1 WUFL. Milwaukee-based VCY recently bought a suburban FM station in New York, 103.9 WVBN.

At the same time, Salem may be selling its Christian Contemporary music stations, including 95.9 KFSH in the LA suburbs. That's because they are not funded by donations. They must compete for advertising dollars. I'm sure Salem would like to sell them to a non-profit organization. Such an organization could take them to non-commercial status and fund them through listener contributions, rather than advertising. Salem couldn't do this because it is a for-profit company.

KKJZ and KUSC - two music intensive non-comms who are both doing nicely

Maybe, but they're both being beaten by non-com news/talk KPCC.

KUSC & KKJZ may appear to be doing well in 6+ numbers, but their audience is mostly 55+, and their cumes are under 400K.

KROQ is also beating KUSC and KKJZ, and is doing much better in cume and younger demos.

I think we all know what truly needs to return to 103.1 😈
With the even greater ethnic population in the limited coverage areas of the two 103.1 signals, the chances of any of the non-ethnic English language formats is less than zero.

It appears that KPFK has stopped subscribing to Nielsen. Nor are the other Pacifica stations.

Except KPFT Houston.
The check is in the mail...

My imagination says different lol
I imagine DJs with 3 hour shifts, 24/7 and even on weekends! But it is not 1959 any more. Todd and Gordon died long ago.

KCBS-FM #5 18-34
KCBS-FM #5 18-49
KCBS-FM #5 25-54

Isn't that amazing. Since 2005, KCBS-FM has been "Jack-FM." It's playlist today isn't much different than when Jack started. Most songs are Rock or Alternative hits from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, the same as it was when it began 19 years ago. An occasional 2000s song is heard and there are a few 1960s titles in the mix. And once an hour you'll hear something out of left field bordering on a novelty song, Can't Touch This, She Blinded Me with Science, She's A Bad Mama Jama, Funky Cold Medina, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

It still has no DJs. Howard Cogan remains "The Voice of Jack." He records quips, heard during breaks several times each hour. They sometimes try to take what's in the news and pop culture, for "Jack" to respond to. The sarcastic and ironic remarks are put together by several writers, whose work is shared on other Jack stations around the country, and a few Audacy-owned Adult Hits stations in other markets that don't call themselves Jack but sound like Jack (KKHH Houston "95.7 The Spot" and WBGB Boston "Big 103.3").

I'm sure Cogan and the writers are paid well. But since their work is shared among multiple stations, they cost little compared to maintaining a staff of local DJs and a multi-person morning show, found on other popular Los Angeles stations.
