KMIY Heading To AC Shift With First Time Christmas Music Move?

Perhaps the question wasn't stated correctly...

Any other recent iHeartMedia stations with a similar stunt in the past year or two? Let's see if the 'red, white, blue' theme has significance (I know, it does...) to what the station will be playing Wednesday morning @9:29 and beyond.

Red, white and blue songs? Could KMIY be going Classic Country to compete with KIIM? Or a simulcast of KNST-790 News/Talk?

Country music has changed so much since the '80s/'90s that I don't think classic country impacts current country's audience significantly. I listen to Saga's "Outlaw" format when I'm in western Massachusetts. They play lots of Alabama, Keith Whitley, Randy Travis and late-in-life Conway Twitty. It's hard to imagine any of those folks' songs connecting with a Florida Georgia Line/Jason Aldean fan.

We're talking about Garth, Hank Jr., Alan Jackson, Wynonna, early Keith Urban, Toby Keith (up to early '00s), Dixie Chicks etc etc. Classic country has evolved and even songs like "As Good As I Once Was" by Toby Keith (2005) are staples on some stations. A mid '80s-early '00s 'classic' country station is what I meant for a possible flip.

I think a simulcast of KNST would be a waste of that big FM stick, unless iHeart moves 790's programming to FM and does something else with the AM. If KNST wants an FM presence a translator would make more sense in a market the size of Tucson.

Maybe 92.9 will bring "The Breeze" to Tucson to compete with Lotus' KMXZ? After all the "red, white and blue" waves in the breeze :)

I though soft AC had been tried in several markets in 2019 and early 2020, with too few people who matter to advertisers (under 55) listening to make it a viable format in agency-driven markets.

Not viable? San Francisco's KISQ is #4 in the last PPM! They were #3 in November. KSWD in Seattle is also profitable. A few months ago 92.5 the Breeze in Sacramento beat KYMX. Tucson also has multiple retirement communities, but not as many as Phoenix and the suburbs.

So to add more intrigue to what the new format will be tomorrow, My 92.9 is currently playing classic TV show theme songs. In the last hour, they have played the TV theme song from the Beverly Hillbillies, the Theme from Flipper, Mission Impossible, Get Smart, The Mod Squad, The Pink Panther and Lost in Space. Before that, they played the Sopranos theme song, “Woke Up This Morning” and “I’ll Be There For You” by the Rembrandt’s from Friends and the Theme from Hill Street Blues. So whatever Red, White and Blue format they were airing yesterday has changed yet again. If I had to bet money on the format come Wednesday, I would say a news/talk format (which to me would be a waste on one of the strongest and best located transmitters in Tucson), country (which also would be a waste with KIIM), or a Jack-FM format (which makes the most sense since they are playing pretty much anything right now).

Also, I wonder if there is any significance to the 9:29 time? That seems odd too. Just in time for a 9:30 news update on a news/talk station?

Finally, they are no longer streaming the station online. The stream is down on the I Heart Radio App as of right now.

It sounds like they are moving the Bull from 97.1 to 92.9, so how is that an all new radio station for Tucson as they have been promoting? So the question now is what happens to 97.1?

Oh how nice. Three or four days of stunting just to put country on a 93KW stick. Thanks for nothing iHeart. Tucson could have had a new format!

There are so few formats that advertisers will support that finding viable new ones is impossible in many cities. This pseudo-flip just puts one of the formats that attracts listeners that Madison Avenue slobbers over as gullible impulse buyers on a stronger signal.

At least it’s mostly running local talent, but hasn’t 92.9 tried country once before and gone nowhere with it? Even with KIIM being a fraction of its former self since Cumulus took over, it’s going to be tough to beat.

92.9 has had so many formats that nobody could remember half of them. They started out as an album rock station known as KWFM. In 1970 the air talent actually picked the music. Today's switch is nothing more than a frequency swap and is yet another example of the cheap "bull" that comes from iHeart. At this point the question will be whether cheap programming from iHeart will beat cheapness from Cumulus. Along the same lines, will Bobby Bones be a bigger draw than Max and crew who are live and local? Junk fed into a high powered transmitter is still junk. I'd put my money on KIIM to remain atop the country format in Tucson.

Intriguing to see people so upset about losing A) a format that in many markets is struggling and a terrible current music pool to pull from B) was right next door to sister KRQ and stalwart MIX on the other side C) rarely if ever top 5 and and lately top 10 at best locally being beat by lesser signals. Country can't really do any worse can it?
