Word discussion

Yes, I can attest to the fact that Tom Herndon is still around, as I am he (or is it him?). There probably aren’t many still around who heard me as a DJ, as I had a short career on WORD from 1964 to 1968, when Bob Brown convinced me I could make more money in sales, and he was right! I worked at WORD for some 24 years, until Bob tipped me off that he was shutting it down at the end of 1988. Luckily, WSPA FM came calling with an offer of a job in sales there at just the right moment. I stayed there until it was sold, and spent the last nine years of my career in partnership with Bill Drake on WOLI FM. I still see Tony Brooks from time to time, but not too many of the old gang are still on the top side of the grass! One correction to one of the contributors stories above: Big Al Bolton was actually killed in an accident on a back road between Union and Spartanburg. The DJ killed at the corner of Main and Pine Streets was (and his name just left my brain, but it wasn’t Big Al.). Otherwise, everything he said was right on!
