WFAA plans glass studio
Channel 8 Victory Plaza telecasts set for next year

12:12 AM CDT on Thursday, July 21, 2005

By MANUEL MENDOZA / The Dallas Morning News

WFAA-TV (Channel 8) announced plans Wednesday to open a storefront studio next year at Victory Plaza, the retail-office project that will flank the south entrance of American Airlines Center with two buildings of high-end restaurants and shops.

The glass-enclosed studio at Wichita and North Houston streets is intended to take advantage of the street life envisioned for the plaza, similar to the interaction between tourists and the television studios of Good Morning America in Times Square and the Today show at Rockefeller Center.

The idea for the studio came from Hillwood, which found interest among other major network affiliates in North Texas before deciding on Channel 8, said Jonas Woods, president of Hillwood Capital.

While TV stations in Chicago and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., are using similar downtown facilities, it will be the first of its kind in North Texas. The concept is to bring a new element to this type of shopping-dining-entertainment district.

Channel 8 officials are not ready to reveal which shows would be broadcast from the new studio, but Ms. Clements said the possibilities include the daytime talk program Good Morning Texas , allowing Victory Plaza visitors to see and meet the show's celebrity guests.

Some newscasts also will originate from the space, Ms. Clements said, giving Channel 8 the option of incorporating street interviews with viewers. The station also is designing a new show with the studio in mind. "We now have the venue to think differently about how we broadcast," Ms. Clements said.

To the south, the studio faces the W Dallas Victory Hotel & Residences, now under construction and scheduled to open next May with hundreds of condominiums and hotel rooms and thousands of square feet of retail space. South of the W, two other condo-apartment buildings are under way, with openings next summer.

Among the other tenants announced for Victory Plaza, which includes 120,000 square feet of offices and 73,000 square feet of retail in two low-rise buildings, are N9NE Steakhouse and clothing store G-Star. Combined with foot traffic from other projects in the booming downtown-Uptown corridor, the plaza is expected to draw more than 11 million visitors a year, Mr. Woods said.

Some of the Victory Plaza stores and restaurants could begin opening as early as May, with an official grand opening in fall 2006. Channel 8 plans to have an early presence and begin broadcasting in earnest by September 2006, Ms. Clements said. The space also will contain some offices, but Channel 8 will continue to have its headquarters on Young Street downtown near Reunion Arena.

One Word: FINALLY!! It finally seems a station in this market has FINALLY grown a brain and jumped on the bandwagon every other major US TV market has done over the past decade. As with most of these stations, it'll be the AM shows based out of the storefront. It'll be interesting to see if any of the other downtown Dallas-based TV stations (Fox 4, Univision 23) will replicate the store front studio idea or even the Fort Worth (NBC 5/CBS 11)stations build a studio in sundance.

I agree that 5/11 should open a similar location in Sundance Square. At least there would be people there. On the other hand we might get to see live shootings from the Dallas studio. ;-)

Expect one of the other 3 net affiliates to locate at the new cowboy stadium, another on sundance square and finally one in the west end or las colinas.

I have a feeling CBS11 will get the Jerrydome slot while NBC5 will go to sundance (alot of legacy with KXAS and Amon Carter in downtown) As for Fox, it'll be the West End for them as the Planet Hollywood space needs to be filled

Lends new meaning to the term "live shot."

My biggest fear is that they are going to move a lot of Operations and Engineering from Houston, San Antonio, and Austin to this new facility and a lot of my friends will be out of their jobs.

That's Belo's M.O. over the past several years.

Should be an interesting place, unless they start throwing stones from the inside.

The story on-air said it will just be a "bureau" - not a replacement for the existing facility. My guess is they'll just do GMT from there with live shots for other shows, and maybe have a small support staff there. Kind of like the Collin County facility, but a bit larger.

This is a very risky move for WFAA. The company is in a deep financial funk and has a hiring freeze in place. They've got a huge facility that houses what's left of TXCN that they are doing very little with.

They won't be moving their main newscasts to this new place. At first glance, it appears this will be used almost exclusively for "Good Morning Texas News 8 at 9am." That seems like a huge waste to me.

It's a lot of money to invest for very little return. Yeah, it'll be cool, but I'm not sure I see it doing a whole lot for their ratings.

The newness will quickly wear off, and the reality of the costs attendant to having a remote studio will set in. The marquee value will score some points in the beginning but that, too, shall pass.

No doubt the point you made has registered on many people (maybe even the financial types at Belo), regarding how the expense of the new layout will fit into an already tight budget.>

What would be the point of a TV studio at the new Cowboys stadium? The amount of foot traffic that would be available in such a location at the times that the studio is actually likely to be in use is probably pretty minimal...

Essentially, it would just be paying a bunch of money for the ego gratification of being able to say that they're broadcasting from the stadium. And let's face it -- no one is going to tune in to a news program just because of that.

Anyone care to guess what the new show is they plan to originate there?
