TV Business Struggling In New Zealand

New Zealand broadcaster MediaWorks on Friday announced it plans to sell its struggling television business, leaving hundreds of workers wondering if they will still have jobs if a buyer can’t be found.

The move also raises the possibility the country of 5 million people could be left with just a single state-owned broadcaster to report most TV news.

The announcement highlights the struggle that traditional TV networks have been facing against the rise in popularity of streaming services such as Netflix.

The company said it wants to focus on expanding its radio and billboard advertising businesses.

I had the misfortune to "tour" New Zealand about 2 years ago. Backward
and in some cases, about 50 years behind the times. No surprise that
tv businesses struggle there. I recall about 5 channels in Auckland and
Wellington and far fewer, elsewhere. Not much of interest on those few
channels. Mostly stuff from the U.K. and Australia with little N.Z. content.
Strange to see antennas 90 degrees off axis as polarization is different in
some rural areas.

Was the radio any better there in New Zealand?

Radio was marginally better, in my opinion. Not a whole lot of choice
but a few stations were pretty good. "Coast FM" was about as good
as it got......
