EMF only buys AM stations if it's part of a deal to get FM stations they want and then they will sell off the AMs. That's what happened in Memphis when they bought KSUD AM and FM and WPLX AM. THey kept the FM and sold the AMs.
EMF is no longer shy about going against established CCM stations. Here in Houston they are preparing to (finally) launch K-Love against long established (40+ years) KSBJ. And they also are possibly close to a deal in DFW, despite the presence of KLTY and several other Christian music variants.
Even back in 2007 EMF launched K-Love in the Tyler-Longview, Texas market on KZLO 88.7 even though the market already had a long established CCM, 89.5 KVNE.
A follow-up on Salem. They have sold "Salem Church Products" out of their publishing division to a private equity company for $30 million in cash, less $10 million in advertising credits on Salem's media properties redeemable over a period of 5 years.
That should give them decent near term liquidity, assuming their operating income isn't too bad.
