SMOOTH JAZZ OUT IN INDIANAPOLIS

Smooth Jazz WYJS 100.9 is no more. It's a Top 40 now...Radio Now 100.9. Happened in late afternoon. Radio One bought the intellectual property of Emmis' WNOU Radio Now station. Shocking, bold move. I thought Radio One had positioned itself as the "Urban Radio Specialist". Any new Smooth Jazz sign-ons anywhere else coming? My thinking was that BA would gain as many stations as they lose. Maybe some are in the works if there's any faith in the format left. Dayton's Smooth Jazz 106.5 looks to be a solid candidate for the required CCdivestitures of two stations in Dayton. So that could be the next SJ casualty. If Dallas picks up a Smooth Jazz, WDSJ would be great call letters to grab (Dallas' Smooth Jazz). Just a thought.

It's too bad that Indy has no smooth jazz outlet now. Although YJZ has been stale for years. It really became difficult to listen to with the repetitive playlist, constant morning show promos and overall boring delivery of the music by it's jocks. Today was just like the day before. It offered nothing. It was the model for what is wrong with smooth jazz radio as a whole. Sadly it will not be missed.

Smooth jazz listeners are already listening to their iPods or streaming audio in the office from the internet. Let's hope there is a way to save traditional smooth jazz radio on the airwaves. But I seriously doubt it.
