Smooth Jazz on AM ???

Was driving up I-89 through New Hampshire this week (beautiful drive, BTW) and landed on 1350 AM from Laconia, NH.

WEZS, a smooth jazz station...on AM!

They sounded great (heard some Metheny and Rippingtons), and quite a refreshing change from the news/talkers and classic rockers from Vermont and New Hampshire that line the highway.

There was a small thread about WEZS in the northern new-england board, a former EZ listening station gradually changed to smooth jazz.

Regards,
Joe

Cincinnati ohio has a smooth jazz am'er too. WCIN 1480 AM. they stream as well. http://www.wcinam.com/ i think 'ezs and 'cin may be the only two smooth jazz am'ers out there, although i know of a small college station in pennsylvania that is on part-15 am station that mixes in lots of smooth jazz and has a specialty smooth jazz show on saturday night.

I'll split this up two ways:

According to Radio-Locator, there are only three traditional Jazz stations on AM: KRML (1410) Carmel, CA, and KEZJ (1450)/KBSU (730) operated by Boise State University.

As for contemporary light or 'Smooth Jazz', except for the aforementioned stations I doubt if any others exist. Keep in mind that I'm using http://radio-locator.com/ and http://www.amlogbook.com/ as my sources.

And radio-locator is, as usual, a bit behind the times - KBSU/KBSJ dropped the jazz over the summer and are now news-talk.

Ralph, just for your information, we know all about the UJC at my station WVAS-FM 90.7 in Montgomery, Alabama. They're a part of my playlist. We're spinning the tune "Down to Get Up." Great stuff! So we're not sleeping here! :D

Neal - yes, I'm sure about the Boise/Twin Falls stations. I was out there in early September of this year. KBSU 730 in Boise and KEZJ 1450 in Twin Falls flipped from all-jazz (and not really smooth jazz, either) to a mixture of NPR news-talk and jazz in August. The whole schedule's here: http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/am730/guide.guidemain. They're all news-talk from 6 AM until 8 PM, then "Jazz Works" (the public radio syndicated format, which is not smooth jazz) from 8 PM-6 AM.

With Pittsburgh not having a Smooth Jazz station whatsoever, maybe a struggling AM might want to take on the format there.

I listened to their stream last night. AFAIC, they're heads and shoulders above many SJers on FM, including both WJZW and WSMJ, which serve where I live. WCIN seems to play more original material. Others should take notice. But then again being on AM, I think they can afford to take more risks than if they were on FM.

WCIN runs jones satellite smooth jazz format and while i'm not a fan of making stations satellite and non local, its a great idea to use it for smooth jazz because jones does a heck of a job with the format.

I am a fan of putting smooth jazz on AM. If your market has more than enough talk outlets, many owners look to either country or oldies. But most often there is a strong country FMer, so for me that rules country out on AM. Oldies have proven to not always being the saviour owners expect. So why not go NAC? You have the advantage of being contemporary and not necessarily targeting the over 55 demo.

In addition to Pittsburgh, I'd also suggest an AM Smooth Jazz in the Lehigh Valley. IMO, 970 would be probably the best outlet in Pittsburgh. It could also work on 860, 1360 or 620 there. In the Lehigh Valley, 1230, 1320 or 1400 would be the ideal bets. The only question is could a Lehigh Valley AM SJer draw enough listeners away from WJJZ?
