Former Pro Wrestler/Manager/commentator "Lord Alfred Hayes passed away yesterday after a few years of debilitating health. Recently Hayes had one of his legs amputated due to gangreen. He had a number of strokes which led to his demise. He was 77 years old. Hayes is known to the mainstream as the snooty, surly, commentator in the WWF from the mid-80's through the early 90's. Prior to the WWF Hayes was a top wrestler/manager throughout the old territorial wrestling system. He had big runs in West Texas and Central States areas in the late 60's-early 70's. He was a top challenger to Dory Funk Jr's NWA World title and the two had many classic matches. Later on he became a manager in the AWA. Initially Hayes was not interested in a managerial role for financial reasons but Verne Gagne the AWA Owner assured him he would make as much as the in ring wrestlers. The managerial stint definitely proved successful. Hayes managed the Masked Super Destroyer who would later become known to fans as Sgt. Slaughter. Hayes continued to manage in Florida, The Mid Atlantic, and Canada before signing on with the growing and expanding WWF in late 1983. Lord Alfred Hayes will fondly be remembered as a class act and a wrestling legend.
