Program directors on long island

Of course, me not intending in the least to underrate the other fine PD's on Long Island and elsewhere :
The Best PD for whom I ever WORKED was Bill Edwards, the WALK and WKJY fellow.

Baseball folks talk a lot about the modern analytic style vis-a-vis the older way of approaching the game.

Well, decades ago, Edwards had the radio equivalent of both styles: consultant printouts vis-a-vis gut feeling.

When WHLI dropped Top 40 to become the second "Music of Your Life" station, former WMCA Good Guy Dean Anthony was named PD & morning jock. He drove from Rockland County to that great Clinton Av building every morning. The format was the dream of a guy named Al Ham, who could listen to the station at his home in Connecticut. Originally, the songs were on a set of reel tapes, played two at a time. It didn't take long for listeners to realize that every time they heard a certain song, they could predict the next song. Sinatra had a late hit getting all kinds of airplay but Ham didn't think it belonged on the station. Anthony overrode him and moved it into the rotation. They also dumped the tapes and put all the songs on cart so the playlist could be mixed up. The station had a full log of spots and more listeners than WKJY, much to ownership's chagrin. Dean had a great vision for the station and implemented it.
