New Classic Alternative/New Wave Station

Hello there. My name is Michael Sutton, and I used to roam this board under the nickname, ‘devorules.’ Back then, I used to lament the lack of a “classic alternative” radio station in Seattle, only to be rewarded with two - a reformatted KNDD - and KRQI - within a week of each other. However, neither of them really filled the void I was missing, and certainly my New Wave-loving friends were still left unsatisfied, dismayed by the repetitive playlists on both stations and over saturation of grunge. By the time KRQI too the leap to Jack FM, we were already back to our CD players.

All of us have a radio station that first introduced us to the music that would eventually shape our lives. For me, it was WXB 102 in Manila, Philippines, an adventurous New Wave radio station that brought cutting-edge groups like Echo & the Bunnymen, the Lotus Eaters, Fra Lippo Lippi, Xmal Deutschland, Joy Division, U2, R.E.M., among hundreds of others, to the FM dial in my country.

On September 10, 2005, I did what many thought was possible. Completely burned out on alternative radio, I resurrected WXB 102 online with two of its original staffers and pre-programmed shows.

However, now my dream has finally come true. I’ve totally revived WXB 102 online with live DJs from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday to Friday. The daily jocks -- George Frederick, The Ghost, Julius Caesar, Mick Flame -- were all from the original staff. In fact, I managed to bring everyone back from WXB 102’s 1986-1987 air core.

You can tune in here:

http://www.wxb102.tk

Our daily live sked is as follows, Mon-Fri (PST):

7 a.m.-11 a.m.: Mick Flame
11 a.m.-3 p.m.: The Ghost
3 p.m.-7 p.m.: George Frederick
7 p.m.-11 p.m.: Julius Caesar

Some people compare us to defunct local powerhouse KJET and others to Canada’s CFNY in their New Wave peak. But, seriously, nothing sounds like WXB 102. Our DJs work without a playlist outside of our primary golds; however, this is not chaos. While we regularly spin obscure acts like the Wedding, Minimal Compact, the Weather Prophets, Blue Zoo, and the Adventures, we also include hit singles from the Cars, the Cure, Depeche Mode, and the Police alongside reggae from Bob Marley, Aswad, and Black Uhuru and hardcore punk from Minor Threat and Black Flag. Plenty of album cuts, 12" extended mixes, and rare imports, too. You won’t hear any grunge or emo but we do include newer artists such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand once in a while and don’t be surprised to hear local legends Young Fresh Fellows and the Sonics, too. We’re not afraid to go beyond the basic definition of New Wave and include Johnny Hates Jazz, Level 42, the Velvet Underground, the Kinks, even Cheech & Chong! In a local connection, one of our jocks is Brent Sanders, who used to DJ a Modern Rock program on Gig Harbor's KGHP in the early '90s. He does our live weekend mornings, lots of C89-type synth rock and others.

I don’t believe in boring mp3-streaming Internet radio. If you have an iPod, what’s the point in tuning in? Our jocks begin broadcasting live from Manila in the middle of the night. We’re having a lot of fun, and I’m inviting people here to check us out. Radio can be enjoyable again. Thank you for reading this and I hope you tune in. We take live requests at:

Michael,

This is very impressive just from reading your post. I haven't listened yet, but I will, and I can feel your passion for this music just dripping off the page. Best wishes for this venture, and congratulations!!!!

I've been listening. Sounds good, I like the 80's music (originals and remixes) and as the previous poster said the passion is obvious. My only negative criticism is I heard a DJ talking about how 2006 is coming to an end and Happy New Year everyone, so obviously this was NOT a live DJ, and the sound quality is poor...sounds kind of like an out-of-phase cassette tape playing. Outside of those two things keep up the good work, the format is very good.

Batfink, thank you for the kind words and for listening. Yes, during the weekends we do have pre-programmed replays except on Saturday mornings. Check us out tomorrow beginning at 7 a.m. PST for all the live programming starts up again. Many thanks!
