New Calls for 101.1 The Beat

It's sad to see those KNRJ letters go away. Harkens back (for me) to a much better time in Phoenix radio AND Houston when it used the call letters in the late 80's. Since Energy left the airwaves, the 101.1 spot seemed like a waste of air space.

We have a stunt and a new format launch set for 4pm tomorrow.

It'll be Bounce, Juice or perhaps Coyote! (does iHM still have dibs on the "Coyote" name, even though it hasn't been used on 95.5 FM in a long time?)

Been trying to figure out those new calls since they changed them. Makes perfect sense with “Bounce” name. Also no sense in being fourth chr in the market with a fringe signal. Good move IMO.

According to that article, they are going to be hip hop. Isn’t that their current format? How is that stunting if the format is so similar?

They have gone back to where they started: Classic Hip-Hop, this time as "The Bounce" 10,000 songs in row while new talent is hired and put in place.

This is filling a hole in the market and fits perfectly alongside co-owned KAJM Mega 104.3; one would expect 101.1's ratings to see a fairly significant increase especially in the first few months. If they don't keep the playlist fresh over time, the ratings may stagnate as happens with many of these Rhythmic Classics, Rhythmic AC and Classic Hip-Hop/R&B stations.

Why did they flip it from classic hip hop to currents in the 1rst place? Not to smart.

IIRC at the time, around 8 years ago or so, KKFR was veering into more of a pop direction.

Additionally the nonstop same hits for years on end probably started to sound overplayed and KNRJ started airing some pure hip-hop currents, especially at night. As time went on they morphed into a pretty good sounding Rhythmic CHR that would even cross over into some Spanish-language stuff at times. Issue was, two competing CHRs with strong signals, plus KKFR went back to more of their standard sound.

In the intervening years, there have been some mild success stories in the Rhythmic Classics area. The ones that have seemingly stood the test of time are those that, like KZCE today and unlike the original 101.1 The Beat, are not just playing rap titles, but expanding into the pop realm with artists such as Rhianna and Justin Timberlake for the attraction of the target demos.

^ Agreed. Hearing a lot of the same stuff already. That's expected in the early days after a launch, yet the only way this format can have a chance of working over the long haul in any market is to be able to add in "fresh" (old) tunes consistently.

Can't upload 500 songs and set it to random repeat.

Rhythmic Classics, for whatever reason, do not have the staying power of songs like Boston "Peace of Mind", Jimi Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" or Blue Oyster Cult "Burnin' For You." No idea why, but they just don't. In order to make it over the long haul, a playlist in this format needs to be wide and deep while remaining accessible.

Monifah "Touch It" is an amazing song. Make it a treat, not a part of the regular diet. This goes for all the songs in the playlist. There are enough huge rhythmic hits released over the period from 1980 to 2019 to not have to have it have a lot of repeats. The principal reason these formats crash and burn is because of listener burnout. An easy issue to fix.

I do like how they are playing some awesome rap party jams like "Humpty Dance" and Let Me Clear My Throat."

When it comes to the rhythmic pop side of things, I may suggest that they go beyond Timberlake, Rhianna & Destiny's Child to play some Blaque, Mya, Christina Aguilera and similar artists. There are so many tracks that the audience remembers, and would love to hear again on a regular basis.

The amazing 6+ ratings success of 94.9/95.1 - with a 3.0 in the recent book & defeating 100,000 watt signals left and right - proves that one doesn't have to follow the prescribed radio playbook to gain listenership in 2021.
