As far as I know there are now three Tucson area AM stations that have FM translators. The first was KGVY which mostly interferes with reception of KSLX in Phoenix on 100.7. Much more recently came 101.7 which relays KFLT which is the religious station on 830. That translator is so powerful that it blocks reception of KKYZ as far as Benson. Most recently, a translator popped on the air on 94.3 and its assignment is to relay KTKT-990. KTKT changed format from Mexican sports talk to Mexican music and the sole purpose for the AM is to feed programming to the translator.
One wonders if the FCC had its head screwed on right when it authorized FM translators for AM stations. Supposedly the FCC also is interested in promoting low power FM which would at least give the public new programming. But instead of anything new we're getting more of what we've already got.
