LA Ratings: Jack up big, Oldies down

Infinity has taken a lot of criticism for their moves in Chicago and New York, but interesting to note that in LA 12+, Jack went up by almost a share and a half. At the same time, the station hurt most was Oldies KRTH.

Note that Infinity has claimed that the Chicago and New York Oldies stations were flipped partly because Jack would cannibalize their audience if launched on a separate signal. Looking at LA, Infinity's logic seems to be correct so far.

Jack up big

As impressive as the 12+ increase is, they're #4 25-54 adults, full book.

The reason why Jack was critisized(sp) so much in NY and Chicago was because Jack REPLACED two great stations. That is why a lot of people hate Jack. It isn't the format, it is the format that was replaced.<P ID="signature">______________

Jack up big

Totally agree. So, all these Jack-haters who engate in board rage ought to check their anger at the door. If their ratings suck a year from now, THEN you can tell us what a bad idea it was.

Actually KRTH wasn't the only sister station to take a hit based on Jack. Both KRTH and KROQ both took half share hits 12+. In the big picture though, Infinity now has three FM's doing decently as opposed to two. Note: A fourth FM KLSX is also pulling decent numbers, however is facing the loss of Stern in the coming months.

Infinity fully expected those losses at KRTH and KROQ. As Slinky stated, they have prevented the oldies cannibalization in further changes. LA's Jack also focuses a little more on 80s New Wave hits that were staples of KROQ. KCBS and KROQ's PD, Kevin Weatherly, basically planned on shifting KROQ's older demos over to Jack.

Which is the only way to judge the format (or any format for that matter). While I personally don't see Jack as a viable format long term only time will tell how it fares once the novelty of hearing songs that haven't been played for a while wears off. Jammin' oldies did well out of the box in many markets too.

Jack up

On top of that, don't you also think what the Jack format looks like today may be very different a year from now, when they've had a chance to fine-tune their tactics and fully develop?

Jack takes a lot of crap on these boards, but what all these critics fail to remember is that NO START-UP is ever exactly the same a year after sign-on.
Because JACK has "killed" a few popular stations, though, the critical types are
jumping on them right out of the gate, proclaiming their impending failure, in some cases before they even get one month's trend under their belts (NY and Chicago).

That statement was very generic and not accurate at all. If you look at shared cume on "Jack" - it actually hurt a plethora of stations - and KRTH was not affected substantially more than say KROQ, KYSR, KBIG, or KIIS.

LA Ratings

Very true- and, really, unless stations are direct competitors it's usually a reach to come to any cause-and-effect with two specific stations.
