In re: KSYC(AM), Yreka, CA

Facility ID No. 15313
Silent since July 19, 2022
Notification of License Expiration

Dear Licensee:

Our records indicate that the station referenced above has been silent since at least July 19, 2022. Therefore, pursuant to section 312(g) of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended (Act),1 the station's license expired as a matter of law at 12:01 a.m., July 20, 2023.2

This letter provides you 45 days to provide evidence3 that our records incorrectly reflect the operational status of the station and that, in fact, the station returned to the air with authorized facilities at some time between July 19, 2022, and 12:01 a.m., July 20, 2023. If you fail to provide such documented evidence within 45 days from the date of this letter, the Commission's public and internal databases WILL BE MODIFIED to indicate that the broadcast license for the referenced station is EXPIRED, that the station's license is CANCELED as a matter of law, and that the station's call sign is DELETED.

Dear Licensee:
This letter is to inform you that the license of AM Station KSYC (Station), licensed to Southern Oregon University (Licensee), has expired pursuant to section 312(g) of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended (Act).1

On February 15, 2024, we sent Licensee a letter stating that our records indicated that the Station had been off the air or operating with unauthorized facilities since at least July 19, 2022.2 Licensee was required to clarify this matter in writing within forty-five days of the date of the Letter. To date, we have received no response. We have therefore concluded that the Station failed to operate with authorized facilities for over 12 months, and that its license has expired.

Therefore, the Commission's public and internal databases HAVE BEEN MODIFIED to indicate that the broadcast license for the referenced station is EXPIRED, that the station's license is CANCELLED as a matter of law, and that the station's call sign is DELETED.

I looked up the coordinates on Google Earth to see what became of the site. It turns out there has been an error in the coordinates for ... probably decades. The actual tower appears to have been 1/2 mile east of the FCC database location, along Lawrence Lane.

This tower site was on 6 acres, surrounded by modest suburban style homes. 2023 aerial imagery shows the tower was dismantled, but no new use for the land. One would assume it will be developed for new homes.

The AM station became redundant when JPR acquired KSYC-FM a few years ago, broadcasting from a mountainside site south of Yreka.

Too bad the translator could not be saved. It might have been useful for travelers along the Yreka-to-Weed section of I-5. They have Z100 though so they're all set.. KZRO is a masterpiece of a radio station!

I am not surprised KSYC is defunct. The FM serves the same purpose as the AM with a lot more listenership.
Yreka was an occasional visitor on 1490 late at night here in WA.
