Judd McIlvain was known for his consumer-affairs reports and programs on television in Houston and Los Angeles but this obituary begins with a reference to his radio show because I wrote it for a radio fanzine.

Judd McIlvain, who hosted a consumer-affairs talk show on KRLA from 1999 to 2002, has died. At age 12, he hosted the daily 15-minute Children's Digest talk show on WBLN-Channel 43 in Bloomington, Illinois. As a teenager, he worked as a DJ at KBIA and KFRU in Columbia, Missouri, and produced and hosted the weekly 90-minute Dance Party on KRCG-Channel 13. Because the teen-oriented program included blacks dancing alongside whites, Ku Klux Klan members staged protests and many local citizens also objected to the integration. The series lasted only 13 episodes. After serving with the United States Army, McIlvain earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree from Columbia University. He worked as a freelance reporter for ABC and United Press International before becoming an assignment editor and investigative reporter for KHOU-Channel 11 in Houston, where he eventually hosted his own program, The McIlwain Files. After 18 years at KHOU, McIlvain moved in 1986 to KTTV-Channel 11, where he hosted "Troubleshooter" segments during the evening newscasts. Two years later, he moved to KCBS-Channel 2 in Los Angeles, where he got his own program, The Troubleshooter Show. McIlvain also did investigate reports for Geraldo, Hard Copy, 20/20 and 48 Hours and most recently hosted the Best Deals television program and operated the troubleshooterjudd.com site which fought against fraud, scams and elder abuse. McIlvain earned two local Emmy awards, eight Golden Mike awards and four Los Angeles Press Club awards. He died on March 9 at age 73 at his home in Woodland Hills.
