KEXP Celebrates 50 Years

This is a great story. There was a time when college students would start radio stations. It happened in a lot of cities across the country. A lot of those stations are still on the air today.

The student station I started out on was started in '71 by a couple of students and a "forgotten" $6500 account in the Associated Student's fund. Still going strong (as strong as 162 watts can be!) 51 years later. And still owned and operated by the students at that college, not the college itself.

Amazing, in that it was the station that broke Grunge. Located in a dusty backwater of a building that looked about as institutional as it gets, but a lot of great music was broadcast from that place.
