John Gambling has retired

Announced yesterday:

Another great live and local show has left the air. John was apparently contemplating retirement later this year but a broken knee hastened the date.

There's a place in talk radio for different types of talk and John's quiet, dignified, inquisitive style served listeners well, IMO. A good balance of guest interviews, political and non-political topics, interesting stories from the host and phone calls.

I'd like to see Salem give the two hours to Frank Morano, at least on a trial basis, but I suspect they'll close the gap by extending Mike Gallagher's syndicated show by and hour, and starting Denis Prager's syndicated show an hour earlier (assuming it's a 3 hour show.) Listeners who called in yesterday made it clear they'd like to hear Morano in that slot.

All that's fine, but it doesn't fit with WNYM. That's how format radio works. A station plays what fits the format. You don't hear jazz on a country station. So you don't hear sensible talk on a political talk station. Yes, there's a place for different types of talk, and as we've said, it's WNYC. But I expect that Salem will replace Gambling with someone who fits with the rest of their day, whoever that is. Variety is usually found in non-commercial radio, and there are lots of those stations in NYC.

His leaving WOR was his big retirement. His audience on WNYM was much smaller. He announced it yesterday at the top of his show and had the GM and Frank Morano,who produces his show on. John did the show from his bed. He was totally immobile. I would imagine his health problems were a big part in his retirement plans. He took everyone by surprise and Morano did the last 90 minutes which turned out to be a glowing tribute to him.

Morano is good and would be the obvious replacement. As mentioned if Salem wanted to save a salary,they could just extend Gallagher's show and start Prager's show an hour earlier. The station carved out that 11-1 block when Gambling arrived in April 2014

Most Salem talkers run their entire schedule, including Philly and San Francisco. Several run local morning shows like Joe Piscopo and Brian Whitman and his co hosts(forgot their names)in LA.

Salem already has a morning show: Hugh Hewitt.

It's sad how far Joe Piscopo has fallen. IMHO he was great on SNL. Probably better than anyone they've ever had a doing voices. He's the one who should have replaced Don Pardo. His "Pardo" was dead on. So was his Sinatra. Unfortunately, Doumanian hired him and Ebersol promoted him. Therefore, Michaels considers him a non-person.

Jean Doumanian also hired Eddie Murphy in that same '80-'81 season. Dick Ebersol later made Eddie the centerpiece of the show and Piscopo was his running buddy. We all know how Mr. Murphy's career has turned out. Too bad the same hasn't happened for Joe.

As far as the post-Gambling 970 goes, they could do one of three things until a permanent solution/host is found:
1) turn the satellite on and clear Mike Gallagher's third hour and Dennis Prager's first hour live;
2) plug Hugh Hewitt in the two hour slot, reducing the delay from 21 hours to five;
3) keep it local and use Frank Morano, Kevin McCullough or someone else in the interim while they search for a new host.

Either way it won't matter. Gambling was the only host bringing true credibility and attention to that station. Giving Morano the slot would be stretching him too thin, as he already produces the Piscopo show during the week. Whatever happens, 970 will still be the third option for talk audiences unless they do something super radical.
