January PPM/ Raleigh-Durham

The Curtis Media stations' encoders were back in service after not coding for the "Holiday" Book, making for some interesting swings in numbers.
  • WFXC/WFXK "Foxy 107-104" is back at #1, even with a drop in share from 9.6 o 8.5. from Dec 22 to Jan 23, though they went up 7.8 to 8.5
  • WTKK '106-1 FM Talk' is now tied at 2nd place with WUNC-FM after leading for four straight surveys, though down almost 2 share (down 1.1 share from Dec 22). WUNC-FM is down 1.1 share from HOL 22 to Jan 23 , but actually increased from Dec 22 to Jan 23, albeit by a scant 0.1 share.
  • Classic Hits WKIX-FM "Kix 102 FM", with its three signals covering the metro now, actually DROPPED nearly 1 share to tie with sister variety hits WBBB "96-1 BBB" for 3rd place. WBBB made an impressive 1.5 share gain since Dec 22. You'll recall Kix's Dec 22 share of 6.5, the last before the 102.3/102.5/102.9 trimulcast, was the highest ever recorded for the 102.9 facility since its 1998 debut.
  • A big post-Christmas drop for the venerable WRAL-FM "Mix 101.5", dropping from 11.6 in HOL 22 to 5.3 in January, still good for 4th place considering the two ties ahead of it. Comparing the Dec 22 and Jan 23 change shows a more-modest 1.6 drop.
  • Classic rock WRDU 100.7 is slightly down but fairly steady at 5th place (5.2-4.8-4.5).
  • A three-way tie for 6th between Contemporary Inspirational WNNL "The Light 103.9" and country competitors WQDR and WNCB "B 93.9" Great improvement for both stations.
  • Continued slide for CHR competitors WDCG "G-105" and "Pulse FM" whose signal over much of the western metro was relegated to two translator frequencies with the Kix 102 changes. G-105 drops a full share from Jan 23 for a 2.4, and Pulse FM is out of the top 10 with an anemic 1.4 share. At least G-105 wasn't beaten by its HD-2 channel, though Classic Hip Hop '95-3 The Beat', is close on G's heels with a 2.1 (they dropped a full share from HOL 22 to Jan 23).
  • Hip-hop WQOK "K 97.5" is down a full share 4.4-3.4, but their 3.4 is slightly better than Dec 22's 3.2
  • Oldies WKIX (AM), now "Oldies 850", lost half of their audience with their 104.7 half moving to Pulse (2.0 to a 1.0)
  • The "WRAL News Plus" format (WRAL-FM HD3 and translators 96.5 in Durham/99.3 in Raleigh) is steady with a 0.3.

Also, the finally growing B93.9 TIED with 94.7 QDR - great job on iHeart's part for finally getting to parity with such an established station!

It takes guts to program radio.

Initially I thought B93.9 was DOA. For several years I predicted it would be a failure, but either QDR’s sound has slipped badly or B’s has drastically improved.
