I actually found a good reason to shut off our HD service!

I believe what ballgame mode actually does is only keep the HD signal active for the text data and HD2/HD3/etc. subchannels (if any, on FM). On the main HD1 channel, the receiver will still light up the HD indicator and show text data, but will be playing the station's analog audio.
