HD Radio Multicasts for Denver

With more and more companies launching HD Radio and 2nd channels of programming, one wonders what you'll be hearing on that "side channel" on HD Radio in Denver. But Denver might be a over radioed market to begin with and it doesn't leave much wiggle room.

But I still see some ninches that the multicasts could fill. For example

92.5-2 could become full blown UAC. Not some "Rhythmic" or "Jamming oldie" mish mosh, but REAL Urban AC.

95.7-2 could become a Hip Hop English station to compete with KS.

100.3-2 could become CHR as Mix-2 today's hits. Don't laugh, Infinity owns a CHR/Pop called Mix in KC just 600 miles from you guys to the east.

101.1-2 could become a Standards FM.

107.5-2 could become a all dance format. Beasley just did it in Miami and JP could compliment KS, since KS plays primarly Hip Hop/R&B to begin with.

I'm all for it!

I've always wanted to have an FM talker where the left channel was liberal and the right channel was conservative. This would be a modern day version of the same thing :)

I would be for 93.3-2 being a true alternative station. Hmm... I like this idea...

Other than the "standards FM" on 101.1, I don't see how any of the other stations would make any money as it seems in a sense they would be competing against themselves, so how would they make any ad revenue with so much programming targeted at "tweens"?

I think it's terriffic that there's interest in this. KBCO has been transmitting HD digital since December of last year and we were just granted an experimental license to begin multicasting a second station on 97.3. We'll be doing it on and off until I work out all the wrinkles in the technology, then it'll be ready for prime time soon.

I will tell you all that when properly implemented, HD radio sounds terriffic. IMO, the sound quality is awesome, better than XM and Sirius. The coverage is better than I expected, you can get a solid digital signal almost anywhere the analog signal is city-grade and elsewhere. For example, driving up the Big Thompson canyone to Estes Park, there's stretches where the HD signal just blasts through, as perfect as can be. It's free of multipath fuzzies in the foothills and city. As much as a radio traditionalist as I am, I am really cranked about what this technology will be able to do, both now and future applications. Stay tuned.

Put those HD receivers on your Christmas wish list. They'll be getting less expensive soon and there's going to be a lot more digital in Denver soon.
