Half of 6:30 mystery solved

Saw billboards all this week touting "Entertainment Tonight" at 6:30 on Channel 8 starting September 12--so all bets on an hour-long newscast at 6 are off. Still no indicator on "Wheel", but that's probably a gimme that Ch 11 will put it back at 6:30. So when is it Ch 4's turn? Since 1983, the syndie "Wheel"'s been on 5, 8 and now 11.

Since 4 is Fox, don't put any money on it. I know of only
two Fox affiliates that run Wheel, one in Mobile, the other
in Ocala, FL. The Fox stations, particularly the o&os, seem
to be doing just fine with their sitcom reruns. Meantime, I
see no reason why 11 wouldn't run Wheel at 6:30. That's the
time slot people are used to seeing it, and it has to be the
strongest show they could put there.

Does anyone know if any other Belo station has dropped Wheel
and Jeopardy! for the 2005-06 season?

There's a billboard on 35 North at about Regal Row that features Wheel and the move, but I didn't pay attention to the date.

There have been several stories in the paper this week on this change.
Wheel goes to 6:30 on 11 as of the 12th.
Inside Edition is paired with Jeopardy in the 4pm hour on 11.
ET is added at 6:30 on 8 - which will continue to run ET at 11:05pm as well.
Channel 11 adds a 9am newscast with their current 5-7am crew anchoring.
Channel 8 also gets Who Wants To Be A Millionaire at 3:30. It currently airs at 11am on 11. I suspect 11 will have Jeopardy at 11am as well.

Wrong perception. Belo did not "drop" Wheel and Jeopardy from Channel 8. Channel 11 out-bid them for it. It should also be noted that Wheel/Jeopardy's syndicator is King World - a subsidiary of Viacom - the owner of Channel 11.

To my knowledge, KHOU here in Houston is not losing Wheel/Jeopardy, nor is KENS in San Antonio.

I'm really surprised that WFAA didn't go with a 6:30pm newscast. As I pointed out in a previous post, I think they could have made more money off the spots sold in that time period, not to mention, they could have had a lot more commercial time. The numbers for Entertainment Tonight are OK these days. It is pretty much a solid fourth here in Houston at 6:30pm, behind "Wheel", KTRK's Hour-Long 6pm News, and The Simpsons. They should expect a steep fall because of this. At least with an hour-long newscast, you might lose some viewers who are faithful to the "Wheel", but you'd gain more from folks who can't make it home from work in time for the 6pm news. It is an untapped audience in the metroplex.

With all that being said, no one said that Belo was a smart company these days. So why should I be surprised?! <P ID="signature">______________

The difference is, for a local newscast, you would have to pay probably more in salaries, since many shifts end at 7pm, meaning you'd be running into OT for techs. There would probably be more production costs involved. ET is a barter show, which means WFAA gets it free, so all commercial revenue is pure profit.

I suppose I should have phrased the question so as to ask if
Wheel and Jeopardy! are moving from a Belo-owned station to
another in the market. Sorry for being imprecise.

I seem to recall somewhere that Wheel and Jeopardy! may eventually
make it to the CBS o&os anyway, 2007 perhaps? Does anybody know
whether this is true?

Not sure. I don't think WCNC, a Belo station, is dropping Wheel and Jeopardy for 2005-06 and WBTV in Charlotte is not a CBS O&O so I doubt they would return to Channel 3 unless they wanted Wheel and Jeopardy back and outbid WCNC for them.

Most syndicators like to deal with "Group" contracts - which is how most of the ABC O&Os have kept Wheel, Jeopardy! and Oprah all these years. KTRK is one of maybe two ABC O&Os that does not have the three KingWorld programs (I know there is a second, but do not remember which, WTVG-Toledo, perhaps?).

I would not at all be suprised to see the three shows jumps to the CBS O&Os in the near future as the ABC contracts end. I remember hearing rumors about a switch not long after Viacom acquired KingWorld a few years back. KTVT could be the start of a trend.

Interesting to note there are already some CBS O&Os that do have the part of KingWorld package already. I believe WJZ-Baltimore has Oprah, but Wheel and Jeopardy are on either WMAR-2 or WBAL-11. In Green Bay, CBS O&O WFRV-5 has the Wheel and Jeopardy, but WBAY-2 has Oprah (I believe).
